I understand you on being honest, I'm in a similar position now. Might consider trading it, car dealers make their own mind on trade value. You will probably lose a bunch of money either way unfortunately.

That said, if it runs when you get it back, no codes, Drive the heck out of it. Nothing to lose at this point.

That thought did cross my mind but I would be constantly thinking, "When is this thing going to break down again and how much will it cost me THIS time?"

Nope...plan A is to go straight to a car dealer while it's running and trade it in. I think it'll be cheaper in the long run to take a loss now.

I'll buy something with a couple of years warranty on it and feel safer.

OK, here's the latest news.

The car is STILL in the shop. I have decided just to go for a refurb engine.

I have spoken to the shop and they have quoted $4.6k for a refurb engine, fitted. They haven't told me the mileage on the engine yet but I'll check.

The thing is...they are telling me that the ECU also needs to be replaced and want $2k for a new ECU. There has been no mention of the ECU being damaged until yesterday so I think they're trying it on.

Is there any way I can check the ECU? Would an OBD scanner show that the ECU is kaput?
