I too have been experiencing the annoying popping/clunking metal-on-metal sound at the rear of my 2011 x5. It would occur mostly when driving slow and hitting a bump or while cornering and the backend flexes. I noticed recently that when I had a passenger in the back seat the noise would be exceptionally louder.
I finally followed this post's advice and used electrical tape to tape over the latches at the following 5 locations below: - Both rear seats - latch that locks the upper tailgate to the lower tailgate (see post 14 above) - The latches on either side of the back that locks the lower tailgate closed This has erased the loud metal-to-metal sound!!!! Very much happy with the results. If what you are hearing sounds like plastic flexing during cornering, consider yourself lucky and ignore the above. |

Yup doesn't hurt to try!...... seriously thank you so much Sal that creaking popping sound in the back of my 2010 X5m was driving me crazzzy, it's now completely gone after wrapping a little electrical tape around the hook latches. I'd buy you a beer if I could lol
Cheers! kurtis |

I wish I saw this two years ago. I had this issue with my '13 X6M and the noise made my ears bleed. And of course, when I went to the dealer and took the tech for a ride, it didn't happen. I'd aim for road imperfections and silence! So far the '16 is quiet. I'll have to remember this thread just in case.
