Hug Your V8

I was not kidding about hugging your TTV8.It might be the last one BMW builds. Note the "Environmental concerns" comment.Sad to see the big V8's slowly slipping away. Found this in Motor Authority. Thanks! PalBay http://www.motorauthority.com/cars/b...our-cylinders/

Exclamation

I saw this coming at the start of 2007, I sold the RS4 for a great price thinking this scenario may happen.

I don't think V8's,V10's or V12's are going away in the next 5-7 years. It's just the trend toward smaller and smaller engines and cars that is very disturbing to me.The question is wether my 10yr old son will get a chance to drive a TTV8 X6 when he reaches a point in life he could afford one.The X5"M" and X6"M" have both been greenlighted for production. Not sure of the engine lineup on the "M" X5 and X6 yet.Late 09 on roll outs for both cars.Buy one before "M"'s end up w/ "large displacement" 2.0L four bangers. Thanks! PalBay

Hmm, well the union boss is talking about the plant in Munich. Palbay, didn't you mention that BMW is building or has plans to build an engine plant right next to the existing NA plant? Who knows, maybe they will be shifting the production of the I6 and V8 to other plants?

There is long range plans and room to build engines in SC on the BMW campus. The Plant volume needs to be approaching 300k units per year to justify the engine plant investment.Current volume w/ the X6 is around 160k units per/yr.After the current plant expansion and the addition
of X3 production, annual volume is expected to reach 260k+/- units. There has been serious talk of some 3 Series production coming to the US ( I created a firestorm on the 3 Series Forum by the mere mention of that possibility) and the addition of an X4 model at some point in the future. The engine is the only major component of the cars made at the US Plant not sourced in North America. With the weak dollar right now...building everything in US dollars would really help BMW's bottom line. Thanks! PalBay

Thank you PalBay. Could you please tell what a large displacement 2.0L four bangers are? Hopefully I will get a x6 m the end of 09 or begining of 2010. I traded my 2005
4.8 is in March then discovered this forum. My salesperson said that he will not mind if I wait. He seems very truthful so hopefully he does not mind the wait.

I was being sarcastic with regard to the "large displacement 2.0L four bangers" comment. Not sure such an animal exist.Just trying to make the point that if things keep heading in the direction they are w/ regards to engine size.We might not have the choice of V8's any longer and be forced to drive very small engined auto's in the future.Hence my smarty comment about small 2.0L engines. Thanks! PalBay

The was an comment in Roundel (I think August issue) from a BMW exec.

Larger engines are going away in favor of smaller. And no it won't take 5 years.

Expect 4 and 6cyl turbos across the model lineup.

BMW has to meet 37.5MPG CAFE standards. They said there is no way they can do it even with diesels and hybrids. So engines must get smaller.

What you are seeing is a push from BMW for larger engines to help pay off R&D costs.
