2011 BMW X5 35iSA - need to wake up iPod manually to use it w/ iDrive

The iPod does not connect to the iDrive/entertainment system until I "wake" the iPod up by clicking on one of the iPod buttons (e.g. "Play" or "menu"). Everything works fine once the iPod is detected by the iDrive. This was happening around every other time when I first got the X5 (two months ago). Now, it seems to be happening with every start-up.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

P.S. - I am using a iPod Classic (120 GB, I think). The X5 completed production on October 4 - has the October iPod/Bluetooth update.
