Which one is a better deal on snow tires fromt he dealership? Help please!

Pirelli makes a 20" snow tire that will work on the X6. It's a Pirelli Winter Carving Edge, we have them in stock for $1720 including tax, and an extra $140 for mounting and balancing.

The other option is getting a wheel and tire package. It will be an 18" wheel with Dunlop GT Winter tires. The whole set comes mounted and balanced, with tire pressure sensors, the price is $2418 with tax.

The narrower the tire the better. The 20s are going to be wider (if you are putting on stock rims) and thus handle like crap compared with the 18s. The $140 for mounting and balancing will be twice a year as you mount/unmount and let's hope they don't damage your rims.

The problem with your 18" package is they are not going to be BMW wheels and they will scream "Look at my Tirerack purchase! I've got them for 6 months out of the year, don't you love them?" and every time you look at your lovely vehicle you will think "when can I get those off".

I do think a better choice is used OEM wheels and your choice of snow tires (check out the tirerack ratings). If you like Rac10000's then go with them, just remember you need new sensors.

Doug and all, thank you but more advices? Okay, I forgot to mentioned, these prices are from the BMW dealership. Doug, the 18' ones will be OEM rims, I saw the rims, nothing fancy but I don't know what to do! Should I go with the package then? I don't want to get rip off by the dealership but don't know what to do. Oh, I don't mind buying used ones from BMW owners, the problem is that I lived in Denver so the delivery might add up! Any suggestions??

Three things
1. I was commenting on the OEM setup, and I didn't think you could put 275s on the back of the OEM 20" setup. Am I wrong?
2. The skinnier the tire, the better in snow. It is a fact. http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/...jsp?techid=126
3. Your setup does look good.

enjoi888 - what wheels is BMW including with that package? Also, note that the BMW winter setup is often with the performance snow tire - that is dry performance. I'm not sure where you live in Denver, but if you are up in the hills, I'd probably opt for a true snow tire. Like a Nokian.

So that is the Silverstone color. Trying to spec a build now and undecided on color. Really like that. Any paint chip issues at the wheels with the winter set up flinging crap on the lower rockers and all?

Some people do, however, it stretches the tire a bit

No argument here, but I cannot go any less then 275, it would make daily pavement driving unbareble. I want some level of sportiness in the winter
3. Your setup does look good.
Thank you. It is TWS with Nokian tires
See above

Yes it is Silverstone II
No issues with rockers
I chose OEM-like offsets, so it looks somewhat inline with original wheels and it's a good compromize between looks and dry/snow performance

i personally cant stand the look of narrow tires in the back so i'm running the pirelli scorpion snow and ice RFT for the 20s 315/35 rear 275/45 front and picked up some x6m reps from ebay to mount them on. worked great this last winter. so i'd go with the 20s instead of the 18s

Is Silverstone II the same as Silverstone Metallic? I don't see Silverstone II as an option on M build site, just Siverstone Metallic.

i rather buy set a wheels 19s with winter tires, swap them out in spring

mounting and unmounting tires on rim will end up scratched up or broken sensors

I just picked up a set of 19" TSW Nurburgring rf's in a 9"f 10.5"r setup and added 255/50/19s in front and 285/45/19" Vredestein snows.
Personally, I would not pay 1700+ for the Pirellis from a dealer. Get the Nokian or Vredesteins, better tires, less money.

Can you take a pic of your winter tires and post them to see how they look like? Where did you get them ? I can go on the website and purchase them? Thanks!

I was told by the rep for TSW that the Nurburgring wheels are not setup for the heavy load of the x6's. They recommended the doningtons instead.

Thats interesting, as the Nurburgring RF's are rotary forged. The Donningtons are actually cheaper. If you look at the post by the Wheel Store that has recently popped up, it is the RF's they recommend.

I haven't mounted the rims yet, but they look very similar to the ones pictured on this thread earlier.
