Questions before i get X5M

Hello everyone. First time posting here, as I'm usually at m3post.com.

My parents are planning to buy an SUV here in Canada because of the 4-seasons we get (especially snow).

They are planning to finance this new car, and the car they drove before that was the X5 4.4. But it had really bad reliability.. lots of problems within the first couple of weeks of the lease and even all the way until the lease ended. But finally we returned the car and they are in the market for a new one.

So i was just wondering if the car we drove was just a "lemon?" (for example, did anyone else face this many problems, or are they common?)

Secondly they were thinking between the X5M and Cayenne GTS. In terms of company history, which has a better reliability? seeing as how this vehicle is going to be kept for probably 7+ years.
