The question is an interesting one and it does depend on one's specific needs, but the reality is that the right question is Q5 vs 2011 X3, not X5, especially since the X3 is redesigned, more powerful etc. I have a similar conundrum, but now more with the 2011 X3 vs 2011 X5. Of course, considering an X3 in any case means having to wait until early 2011.

Based on performance, the 2010 Q7 vs 2011 X5

-The Q7 280hp/266lbs tq@ 2750 vs X5 300/300lb tq@ 1200...
Now I'm interested to see what the performance specs are on the new 2011 Q7 (V6 Supercharged) vs 2011 X5.

-The Q5 has no comparison to the X5, as the Q5 does not have the optional 3rd Row seating, and the V6 is rated at 270hp and 243lb tq @ 3k rpms vs. the 300hp/300lb tq @ 1200 rpms of the X5.

IF your going to compare anything you have to look at the new Q7 when the numbers are published. I will give it to the Q7 that it has a slightly larger interior (more head space and leg room). But that's about all it's got going for it right now, until the official numbers are posted...

I fail to see how the Q7 compares to the X6... The Q7 is up to Seven Seating (like the X5) and the X6 seats upto 4 people... You can't compare the two, at least from my perspective

In terms size Q5 compares well with X5. X5 is surprisingly not that big in terms of luggage and passenger space.

X5 Q5
Luggage: 21.9 29.1
rear leg room: 36.6 37.4

The numbers are from Edmunds and Car and Driver.

To compare, Acura MDX with 3rd row seat down offers 42.9 cu ft. Not sure what causes this packaging issue with X5.

X5 also weighs 1,000 pounds more.

I find these to be similar vehicles... go with which one feels right and you won't be disappointed.

For starters, I have replaced routers 3 times in as many years and my Chinese made lcd tv started flickering like old tvs with horizontal hold issues after just one year. The mop I can live with.

Oh, and my shoes are New Balance. Made in the USA. : )

And all the above items you mentioned are CHEAPER than US made, not more expensive. If the Chinese made Q5 were $25K, it might be more acceptable. Have you seen how chinese workers live? Suicides are way up there.

Not sure here, but in some fields manufacturers will cheat a little n the ways they measure dimensions. The X5 sure looks a lot bigger.

I really don't understand the luggage spec either, I'll have to compare X3 and X5 side by side. X3 supposedly has 30 cu ft luggage space, bigger than X5, which doesn't make any sense to me.

The X5 22 cu ft spec is reported by BMW; both the 3 and 5 series wagon have space, about 25 and 30+ cu ft.

I recently leased an X5 after having an Audi for many years. We looked at both the Q5 and the Q7, but neither really compare to the X5. The Q5 is smaller and the Q7 bigger. The X5 was the perfect size for us.

BMW's web site quotes the cargo space of the X5 as 75.2 cu ft (with the 2nd row down). The Q5 only has 57.3 cu ft. At over 10" shorter in length, it is clearly not the same size as the X5. Also, even though the X5 35i is a bigger, heavier and more powerful car, it has pretty similar fuel economy, getting 1 less mpg in the city but 2 more on the highway. Pretty impressive.

The Acura MDX is definitely worth taking a look at if you're looking for cargo space... it has a lot more space than the X5, although it's not nearly as much fun to drive as the X5. It is extremely comfortable, loaded with technology, and is much less expensive though.
