I had ventilated seats on my Mercedes ML, Nissan 370z Roadster, Jaguar XKR, Range Rover and now on my X6m.
I can make a comparison... 1. The purpose of the ventilation is NOT to get you cool, but to not sweat and have a wet shirt. 2. if you feel an Icy breeze, go a level lower, as this is not good for your lombar area. 3. It depends on the temperature of the car. If you let 10min the engine + seat ventilation running, you will see that the seat is cool. That is because the air ca flow when you are not on the seat, obstructing the way. On the Z, the ventilation was used like a blower for heat or cool and it was brutal, but it was a convertible and the temperature with the top off can be extreme. See the system here. On the usual cars, the seat fans are not powerful. RR and Jag are the faintest systems, ML & X6 are medium, and Nissan 370z Roadster was the extremist... BTW black leather, no ventilation and sunny days = hell! |

When I first picked mine up I was dissapointed that they were not more aggressive, having lived with them a few day now I would not give them up Side note, my wife turned them off because they were "too cool".
The main way to notice is to sit in them for awhile, them put your hand between you and your seat. The seat is nowhere near body temp. -Dwight |

For those of you who complain, could you check your settings in iDrive?

Um, I could but that's the setting for the regular ventilation I believe. The air from the seats is not temperature adjustable as far as I know (it is just air and whatever the car temp is, that's what you get).

I asked a number of different ADs and all said the same thing to me, the only way to change the temp in the seats was to change the temp in the car. I sat in a number of cars and tried to see if I could feel a change, or if I could do anything to speed up the cooling down of the seats. Nothing. My guess is, everyone that thinks they are controlling the temp on these is feeling some sort of placebo effect.

Um, I think the manual uses the term "flatulence', not fart.

I too question the benefit of the vent seats. I have brought my X5M back to the dealership twice and both time received the same response that they are working.
I have even tried them when the outside temp is over 95 degrees, and don't feel any cooling effect, but what feels like the seat getting hotter. Maybe that is why they call them vented seats...not cooling seats. So, I my opinion, they are worthless.

Mine is working fine. I can feel it from bottom and back. Since I am not too tall, I can sense cool air on my neck too. I really like this feature so that my shirts or pants wouldn't stick to the seat.

Hello,
Just got back from my service, and the ventilated seats are functioning according to specs. The service guy I know personally, so the info is correct. If the car is baking in the sun and you turn on the vents, the fans will pump out heat stored in the seat. They only use cabin air from the bottom thus do not have any cooling capability from any settings in Idrive. Too bad they couldnt just add a small vent tube from the rear air conditioner vents. Oh well. Luv the M, Cheers, |

Dont have it in the X5, but I have it in my Lincoln and when you turn it on, you can almost instantly feel the cooling. (Beige int) Awesome feature and it will be in our next X5... The test drive mule had it and it worked well (Black int). But on both you can definitely hear the fans going.

Possible ventilatied seat fix?
X5'ers, I checked the web for a solution and found a great little trick on the Lexus site. They simply redirected cooling air from a vent under the front seat towards the intake of the fan for the ventilated seat. This vent normally directs air to the rear seat passenger's feet. Has anyone tried something like this on their X5?
Have a look at the pics at the site below. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-s...ts-easy-6.html I have been in the market for a used X5. I tried the excellent cooled seats in the Infiniti so when I tested an X5 I was very disappointed with the performance of the ventilated seats. The vehicle had been in the sun all day and just blew hot air through the seat for the entire test drive. I understand what the problem is regarding the ambient air temp and the heat of the seat itself after the car has been in the sun a while. |

The pictures are with my seat moved all the way forward. The lip could be a little bigger (another 1/4 inch?) but that is about it - there is no clearance. This does beg the question that if you have cool air coming out of the LOWER vents as AndreyATC showed, you SHOULD have cooler seats.

When I turn mine on, I can hear a noise behind my neck and if I put my hand there I can feel a faint breeze. As for as being a useful tool to keep you comfortable, it scores a zero.

I've had them on a Lexus IS250 and on an Infiniti FX50. My Hybrid X6 did not come with these, although it has almost every other option. I was surprised at the omission.

I've got the same issue. They really don't seem to be doing much of anything. Had a Mercedes E Coupe and the affects could be felt right away when I turned the seat cooling on. Will fiddle with the settings some more. Could be I'm doing something wrong.
