the new iDrive
by now i believe we've all seen the new iDrive system on the upcoming 7-series. the 3-series is getting next also which should be on the market sooner than the new 7. some cool new features are nice, and possibly easier to use then the current system. question is, will it make to 09 X6? i was gonna get the first 08 X6 50i from my dealer but seems like there's one more reason to wait for the 09 (along with the possible full-leather interior). what do u guys think, or hear? i'm curious if the new iDrive will be in the 09 X6.

I think I read somewhere that maybe starting with the September production run they may have the new iDrive but more realistically the new iDrive will be in cars manufactured in 2009 ...

Is the ‘New iDrive’ a hardware upgrade, or just a software upgrade? Point being; perhaps you can just go in to the dealer with your ’08 and have them download the new software???...

According to recent reports, the X6 will get the new iDrive starting from 3/09 production. All BMW 2009 models will start from September production. Anything before will be considered 08 model...that's what i've been told from my local BMW dealer.
I was planning to order X6 50i from September production, however, when I learned that the new iDrive will not be available until March 09, I changed my mind and started thinking to wait until then. It's just that the system is so nice that I'm willing to wait since I'm paying the same either way. Besides, I don't wanna be left behind with the current iDrive , when there's a newer version with many great features. I thought of buying the car and using it for 6 months and then trade it in for the one with the new iDrive. Maybe there will be an M Version as well in 09. I'm just not sure I would get a good trade-in value that time, unless my dealer works out a good deal for me. So what you guys suggest I do? wait or buy/trade? |

I am sure the new iDrive will be great after 3 or 4 years. Based on history, it will take several years for BMW to work out the bugs. I would not be the first one on the block to get the new system.
It is frustrating the iDrive updates come out almost monthly and yet owners cannot get the updates easily , are not provided bulletins on the changes, and have to have a valid problem to get BMW to upgrade for free. Unless the new system allows the owner to download updates over the Assist network, it will continue to be a pain in the ass.

the hardware looks completely different so i don't think software upgrade is an option. the new system is more like Audi's MMI now.

I'd be more concerned about missing out on the DCT from the M3 that will now be available on the 335 coupe, or the newer more powerful version of the 35i engine in the new 7 series!
Personally, I'll still be happy getting my X6 in August and being one of the first driving one here! |

Damn chuck, I have been saying the same exact thing. I have even written my comments down so that I can discuss this with BMW Face 2 Face in Oct when my wife and I travel to the Performance Plant in SC.

Yes, you can do this on the Settings page. In the main menu, push your Idrive controller, and look for settings, there you will see where you can chance from Miles to Km.
