X5M Engine Oil Level
My X5M got an oil change today from BMW of Austin, and soon after arriving home I checked the idrive screen for oil level and this is what it showed on the display. Is it OK if the oil level is not at the maximum level or it should have been topped off?
Picture below is from my wife's 3.0si X5 screen, last oil change was 2 months ago and the display shows the oil volume is at the maximum level and I don't remember it displaying below the max level since day one of ownership. Thanks! |

Err oil level should never be at maximum or above. If it's reading maximum, how do you know if it's not overfull?
Too much oil will cause all sorts of problems, including being whipped by the crank during operation, causing the oil to become aerated and effectively losing the ability to pump it around the engine. |

Hard to say without a physical dipstick.
If it's above minimum, I'd only worry about the quality of the oil. Maximum is only there to prevent damage. |

I don't know if it displays an oil level above maximum. If not, then there is no way to know if overfilled. On that case, I'd rather it showed just below maximum.

I did my own oil change and the reading fluctuates from full to shy full. At one point I thought I needed to top it off but after driving 120 miles it registered Max.
I agree best leave it alone but keep an eye on it. If it continues to drop then a top off might be needed. |
