Beware of resale value
Hi everyone
I recently did some research on how much money I can get for my 2012 X6M with executive and leather package with 29000km. The numbers I got were ridiculously low. I'm located in Ottawa, but I also got quite a few offers in toronto area. The car was 115k new. The best they can offer is in the low 70s. Even BMW is supposed to have good resale value and even the X6 is becoming so popular. Just thought it was good for us to know. Btw my car is black with red leather. The resale issue is to due with lack of education about the car...many of these idiots don't seem to understand it is an actual M model. Basically you will have to sell it privately to another BMW/M enthusiast to get the proper resale.

Resale is tricky. First off, you have pretty significant mileage (km sorry) on that bad boy for a 2012. Second off, the M cars lose their values quicker than the 35 and 50 (mostly cause they start so high - that's my guess anyway). The M3 might be the exception. Next, the dealers are going to lowball you. They don't like a 1 year old used M vehicle on the lot. Who knows what the previous owner did to it -most people are going to just order new. Worse, as you know, they will instantly mark it up $15K.
Last but not least, first year depreciation is brutal. Believe it or not, it will probably stabilize for a year or so now and then start the drop again. The fact remains that the 35/50 are one of the best residual values on the market (X5 too) - you just get killed in year #1 no matter what. PS - you should see what happens to a Alpina B7 in the first year!

I agree with alot what have being said here. But lets look at it, as a buyer, or even a fan of M(which I'm). Tomorrow you'll tell me "Hey listen buy my car with 20k + miles on it, for only lets say for 85". As a buyer or even a fan of M, I'D NEVER EVER BOUGHT USED M CAR. Unless I know the owner from the childhood. We all know what we do with those cars. And if I'm looking for a M, then I have money, If I have money - I'll buy a new one from the factory. Nothing personal mate. Just my 2 cents.

i totally agree with your points. i never expected to get 80% of my money back but the percentage of value lost is just outrageous.
The main reason for bad resale value is actually the BMW dealers are trying to get their 2012 M outta their lots. low 70s is what they sell for so the wholesalers can't give me more. I actually got offers from private buyers in the high 80s which is not too bad. |

I'm sure this won't help any, but unless X6's cost a lot more in Canada it looks like you overpaid to start or really piled on the options. The only way I could get to $115k would be to add every single option including new wheels. If you take off 21" wheels, that drops MSRP to around 109K on a 2013 with everything. Some options you just get hosed on resale. So, call a healthy optioned x6 m at 105K. Now, most people I know wouldn't pay sticker, so knock it down to 100k (which you should still do better in my opinion). Factoring last years model and around 20,000 miles, I wouldn't expect a dealer to offer more than mid-70's, which would translate to a resale price in the 80's. Seems fair to me. All the used 2012 models I could find had less than 10,000 miles and were selling in the mid to upper 80's. Seems like great resale to me.

And I've ordered a 2013 X6M I should just get a 2012 model with a few miles on it and save the rest of the money for modding.

Thank god I am safe from resale value terms. It's not necessary always that u will gain from it. Sometimes it can also lead to loss as my friend has shared his experience. So I got bewared now and thanks to him as I was recently palnning to buy something on these terms. Keep updating my buddy!

That new car smell air freshener at the car wash may only cost $2.00 in the machine, but it will never give you the true satisfaction received from losing $20,000.00
