K&N filter for X6M installed. DIY with pictures

Ordered this two days ago and got it today. Install took me about 5 minutes. Total took me a little longer since I took pictures for the DIY. Thought this might help anyone that might need it. Haven't taken the car for a spin yet but I doubt that I will be able to really feel a big difference. Will update later.

Here's the DIY

OEM airfilters in orange, K&N on top

First, Remove the 4 silver screws along the top pane
l

Next, on both sides of the air box there is a ball mount. Simply pull up on this area with a prying tool (a flatheard screwdriver would also suffice) The upper piece should pop up

Lift directly upward

This what is underneath

Now there is another piece that needs to be popped up.

The top panel comes off but you don't need to take it off. It will pop off without taking the piece off

Same thing underneath

Now you can take the front piece off the car

Make sure you un hook the clips underneath. There are 4 that run along the bottom of the piece, unhook them and you can pull the piece free

OEM Air Filters

K&N

Now just do everything in reverse and put everything back together. FIrst make sure that you hook all 4 hooks along the bottom:

Then firmly press down on all three points that you popped out earlier. With pressure, they will pop back in. The screw in the 4 silver screws and all done! Viola!

I am looking at realoem.com
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...05&hg=13&fg=20

I don't see the non M 4.4L (the 50i N63 engine) as having the air filter elements KN is now selling. anyone else know where the air filter elements are in the 50i?

To be honest, I don't feel much of a difference - but then again, I haven't really pushed the car at all since I put it in. Its traffic everyday of the week to and from work. Maybe this weekend I can go for a nice drive and I'll give you an update later.

To feel the minor difference that the filter makes, you need to know where to look for it. The car needs to be driven in manual mode instead of letting the automtic transmission shift. Besides the obvious gain in WOT, the gain will show up in the snappiness in transition between throttle positions. Example: going from 10% throttle in cruising to 70% throttle, the car will feel snappier in response vs the old restrictive filter. You'll also need to do this when holding a gear at an RPM, say 4000k. The automatic transmission shifts too early during normal driving conditions to let the driver feel much of a difference after the minor gain in HP. The gain in HP in WOT is not too much either because of the % gain in HP is so small in relation to how much the car have already. a 3 HP gain on a 150 hp car is a lot in ration vs a 3 HP gain in a 555 HP beast . But extra HP is extra HP. I'll take it any way I can

It is a pain in the balls to get to the filters in the 50i. Alot needs to be taken apart to open up the airboxes. I attempted to change them today but it got dark and I had to put it back together. The entire cover from the top of the engine to the bottom of the windshield needs to be taken off. Really gay compared to how simple it is for the M.

Do not think so,i like to change these myself more often even just the oem parts, but in the 50i it looks like a big job compared to the 135 i had and even the x6m,not sure why they made it so different for an engine that is very much the same in design ?
