Transmission Replacement
Transmission Replacement:
Just got a call from my service advisor that our 2012 X5 35i transmission needs to be replaced (34k miles). They cannot pin point the issue but after running the diagnostics they received permission from BMW to replace it. I am by no means a brainiac when it comes to the mechanics of the car, but noticed something was off when we came to a stop and the car would jolt forward. It only occurred once the car was warmed up. Has this happened to anyone else? Now I am concerned about the reliability of the other mechanics of the car. Would the replacement of the transmission hurt resale value since I would think this would show up on a CarFax? Should BMW extend the warranty on the new transmission or other parts of the car due to this issue? Any insight is appreciated. |

Wait, wait.. are you saying they are replacing the transmission after you reported the jolt and they could not see why it happened? Did they reproduce the problem in the shop?

When I had a 335, I experienced the same. Coming to a stop and just before you stopped, it just felt like it dropped another gear, and made the car jump forward. R2 transmission was what they did.

my car does this too, but its very subtle, and only sometimes, depending on whether or not my car drops from 2 to 1 before I come to a complete stop. Usually if am going faster than normal and come to a stop sooner than my trans can shift down. Is that what you mean? Again, mine is very subtle.

Could easily be a programming issue. Very surprised they are replacing the whole transmission. But I guess they know better.

Just got a call from my dealer as well with the same result for a similar issue...new transmission getting installed on Friday.

Got my X5 back yesterday, and it is definitely shifting much smoother (even during this period where adaptations are set).
On the service invoice, the step that triggered the go ahead for the replacement (as far as I can tell) was that they found 'sparkle' buildup in the trans oil pan. Just happy I was able to have it all done under warranty.
