Remote Start?

Has anyone had a remote start installed in their E70 X5? I have a 2011 X5 50i. Any feedback, good, bad? What brand? it would be nice to have one integrated into the key fob.

I heard that BMW will void the warranty if you have a remote start installed. Something about them using fiber optics. I sent BMW a letter about getting their act together about this topic.

Let us know how you make out with that. I bet they ignore it and never get a response from your letter. Did I also hear that BMW will void warranty if you install an aftermarket exahsut system too?

I had my E90 335i in for service a few times with an AE Exhaust and Alcon front BBK, and my warranty was never voided. I even had the free brake fluid flush done, with the BBK on the car!

And they can't void your entire "warranty" due to aftermarket parts. If your windows stop working right or your water pump goes bad, they can't say "well, you have an aftermarket exhaust, your warranty is gone." It just doesn't work that way. But if you have an aftermarket exhaust and your O2 sensors go, or the turbo fries itself, they may have a case to deny the work.

Has anyone installed a remote start on the X5 (2010 or 2011 model) yet? I saw an article on internet: http://caralarmaccessories.net/2010/...n-2010-bmw-x5/

I have seen kits available for new x5's for remote start that utilizes your factory bmw remote. The vehicle is started by hitting the unlock button 3 times which starts the car. My dealer told me remote start would void my warranty though, so im afraid to take the plunge.

Its the one option i really want unfortunately . I don't understand why BMW won't get with the program.

Does anyone also know if the remote app for the iphone that was released in Europe coming to the US? I would love to be able to unlock, lock and locate my vehicle right on my iphone. I mean if you have BMW service included in your vehicle, the options could be endless. If your vehicle was stolen you could tell the police exactly where it is, you could in theory kill the engine. We probably will never see that , but the GPS locate feature, remote start, and lock unlock doors can all be done if BMW allows it.

I doubt remote start is a feature BMW will implement anytime soon as in most European countries it is illegal to leave a vehicle running unattended on a public road!

Would be cool though

We have anti-idling restrictions in many municipalities. Normally there is an exception for very cold or very hot days. BMW has taken the position that idling os not good for the engine and exhaust so they do not like remote starters. In fact they have gone n the opposite direction, installing auto stop/start features in some models in Europe. It was a little disconcerting when the diesel engine of my 3 series rental shut itself off at a traffic light, then restarted.

I have never used a remote starter because I have driven mostly manual transmissions. Until BMW I always had a block heater. I found that it made a big difference in cold weather starting and because the coolant was warm, I was able to get heat from the car much sooner. I have never been able to get a block heater installed on a BMW. Any similar experiences?

I don't know where you're coming from but there's this shop in Nanuet, NY who works a lot on bimmers, Maserati, MB, etc. and seen them do remote starts on these brand cars. My brother just had his 2010 push to start X5 using a Viper 5902 with a Smart Start module and he loves it. The shops name is Sound Concept. I think their site is www.soundconcept.com.

I will be doing the viper 5902 as well on my LCI. Im hoping to get it finished next week.. Warranty void for a remote start is BS!! Anyone ever heard of the Moss vs. Magnuson Act? in short means.. Dealer must prove that a specific modification is a direct cause for whatever warranty issue is to be declined... Went to the Supreme court many years ago when a dealer refused to fix some window electrical issues because the customer had a supercharger system.. Of course stealerships won't tell you this because they always try to weasel out of their obligations!!

Very sad but true. The funny thing is they have Sound Concept put in like a Radar Detector and Dealerships it as their own.

Sorry to bring up an old subject but it is illegal to void the warranty of the entire car by adding an aftermarket part to the vehicle. This act was enacted by the Federal Trade Commission in 1975 to protect consumers and aftermarket companies. Basically the only thing they can void is warranty on a specific component that was damaged by the aftermarket part that caused it. This must also be proven that this was the cause of the defective part.

Read more about this act here.

Hey guys,

Sorry to revive an old thread but after looking through 15 pages of threads I believe that I already know the answer but will ask the experts anyway.

I am looking at a 13 X5M that is loaded including comfort access and soft close doors. Would a truck like this come with OEM remote start or not available as part of the original equipment list from BMW?

TIA!!

When retailers don't post prices openly, it's because they want the chance to sell us on why it's so absurdly overpriced. You wanna tell us what you paid to save time?
