X5 50i DIY Oil/ Filter Change Instructions

Anyone know where I can get this? I did a search and can't find anything at all. Would the instructions be the same as an X5M? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yup, believe you need a 86mm oil filter removal tool, a 6mm hex socket for the oil filter cap drain, and a 8mm hex socket for the drain plug.

Thanks, anyone have any diagrams, pics or descriptions of where the oil filter is (I assume it's the canister type), and where the access to the oil drain plug is (I assume there is just one on this engine, not two?). Thanks again.

Bump!

I am interested in (no flaming please) my break in oil change at 1200 - has anyone changed their oil on an N63tu (X5 50i) engine? On my e70 X5d the filter was up top and easy to get to the oil drain plug on the bottom..

Where is the foil filter located? Is the oil drain plug easy to get to? Any special tools required to open it? For the X5d it was all just generic metric sockets to open everything up...

Thanks for any tips..

John

Any update on this? It looks like there is just one drain plug, right by the filter. Both the filter and the drain plug are easily accessible under the truck. Ijust want to make sure it's just the one drain plug.

Any opinion on using Mobil 1 5w-30, I used it in M3?

You really don't need instructions, its so easy.. (if you've changed oil before on any car)

Everything is accessible without removing anything prior

Someone in another forum mentioned that new 50i's came from the factory with a protective cover over (under) the oil filter that dealer technicians routinely threw in the garbage after the first oil change rather than reinstalling it.

I mention it just in case someone runs into one. Otherwise, j6yd is correct, if you have even just light experience doing oil changes, you will not have any trouble recognizing the filter.

Oh thats a crafty move!

sonic03inSC I did alot of research on oils and 0w-40 Castrol Edge (Euro formula) came up over Mobil 1.

I'm in FL so my engine oil is probably always warm but when I made the switch months ago I gained an extra 300miles before needing to top up a quart

As much as I despise Walmart they always have deals on Castrol :-)

Timely thread; i just picked up a '12 50i (N63) off-lease and plan to replace all fluids and filters.
The owners manual doesn't even talk about a filter and only the iDrive menu for 'checking oil level'... i guess no dipstick.

I am seeing (online and here too) that a full engine oil service is 8.5L of 5w30... anyone have different information ?

Since i am overly anal about vehicle maintenance i'll post photos and document this (routine and easy) service for anyone that might find it useful.

The oil change on this is really simple and it does take every bit of 9 quarts. I just switched to pentosin 5w30 and so far the engine isnt eating oil like it did when i put the mobil 1 synthetic 0w40 european blend, the reason for the switch was due to the ll-01 not being on them anymore. Let me know where you find the oil canister remover from, i use a wrench and cut myself everytime when taking the oil canister off.

The drain plug for my filter is stripped out which makes the changes a little bit messier than they should be. Anyways good luck, the bmw's in my opinion are the easiest oil changes i have ever had to do.

Thanks, i have already located all of the 'stuff' to do it, just waiting on the tool and oil+filter to arrive this week. And i agree on the oil changes being easy on BMW's, even more so when the filter housing is on top of the engine...

VERY NICE writeup sir.
I did this service last night and added some comments on some observations I had, that hopefully will help others who are referencing your DIY.

Here is a newer link to that same page, not sure why it appears different than yours above that I used to get there; pasting here just in case.
