Strange hole above glove box

Hey guys. Just bought a used 2012 X5M, probably one of the best single car you could have to enjoy all that the San Francisco Bay Area has to offer.

Anyway, noticed this shredded looking hole right above the glove box door. Anybody know what this is? Is it something the previous owner did to modify the car, then remove whatever it was they did before they sold it?

Thanks.

Yeah I'm afraid to ask the dealer in case its something the previous owner did that might void the warranty.

I really do not think that anything was done to that area as it's prob a pain just to even get to... I think to be completely honest it's just bad design and hiding that flaw... Just my opinion

is it possible that the airbag was deployed and sloppily placed back?

Too funny, I noticed this gap in my 2012 as well a week ago.
Since we all have it, it is save to assume it is normal.

Let me guess: you saw it in the dark, because light shined through?
