Price of tires
For anyone thinking about upgrading to the factory 21" wheels I thought I would pass along the price of tires. I was considering them until I researched the tire price and you are much better off finding a 22" wheel that you like better because tires are much cheaper. My dealer has a White 50i demo in the showroom that has the 21" wheel upgrade (285/35/21 and 325/30/21 tires). Well the best price I found was at Tire rack and the 285 tires are $549 each and the 325 tires are $578 each

So did you price out either the same or even wider 22" tires??? As a comparison that is kinda missing in your post I assume that your dealer either put style 128 or 275 on that white 50i? Do you happen to have any pictures of that 50i with those 21" wheels?

I noticed that the run-flats are quite a bit more than regular performance tires!

Keep in mind the bigger the wheel the worse the ride on low profile tires. Also fuel economy will decrease as the wheels get heavier.
I have the 20" Y spokes. There are several tire choices in the 20" size as the X5 uses the same size. There are also run flats that cost $250-$450 each depending on brand. I agree with the OP though. Across all car brands the most popular wheel sizes are even numbered, 16,18,20,22. Odd size wheels like 19" have less tire choices and seem to be more expensive. Sorry i am Soooooooo late on this subject.
I am researching 22s now and i am NOT liking that for the Rear 315 is recommended but for the 315 or 325 i can not find any higher then 30 series. if i go 305 then i have a few more options like 30/35/40 or 45 series in 22s damn it, what a choice. better luck up front with 285-35 or 40 series. I really do not want to go any lower than 35 series on either front or Rears with the X6 50i.... I wonder has anyone one 22s on the X6 50i yet??? anyone?

Just an $0.02 comment: I think the issue of ride quality degrading with larger wheels is a little overdone. I have had 20-inch summer wheels and 18-inch winter wheels on my X5 for six years. The difference in ride quality between summer and winter is almost undetectable. (The biggest differences are steering feel and noise: big, wide tires tend to tramline in longitudinal grooves in the road, and Michelin Diamaris are a lot noisier than Pirelli Scorpions.)

BTW, are you trading your X5 in for the ML550?

No, I'm not trading the X5. No dealer wants out-of-warranty SUVs -- even low mileage and in showroom condition -- so they offer sweet diddly in trade. I'll sell privately as it's kind of a specialty vehicle, what with the body kit and supercharger. I'll take a bath and some lucky kid will get the ride of his life, but that's reality. As long as it goes to someone who appreciates it, I'll be happy. |

My wife's M3 is the other way round: wider rear than front with the OEM summer wheels, but we bought aftermarket rims all the same size for winter and no problems. I have found Tire Rack seem to know their stuff when it comes to what will fit and what won't. They also know which TPMs will and won't fit with which wheels -- very important. I always select winter rims based on durability of the finish (no chrome, for example) and the ease or otherwise of hosing off slushy frozen brake dust (no finicky, impossible-to-clean spokes and imitation bolts), as well as size and offset etc. I'm guessing that any set of wheels rated for the X6 and capable of clearing the brakes will replace your Y-spokes OK, even though yours are offset. |

check out these style 275 21 inchers look good!
I know the tires are expensive, but this is a real nice look. I am working with my dealer to see if they could purchase the 20's off the car when it comes in and swap for these beauties. Either that or I will use HRE wheels, and go custom.

I agree,
those style 275 in 21s are Sweet but the cost of Tires are redicluous. why 21 bmw, why? i understand exclusivety but the economy is trumping that right now. and for you guys up in the North, you have to change out winter wheels/tires in the spring and vice versa in again in the fall but us down south who do not see snow anymore(i am from brooklyn, NY) we do not. sucks but our winters are cold not arctic sub-zero-like cold. as lond as we run all-season-HP tires all year around were good. when we were stationed in Germany we did not have a choice. it was a law that was enforced but here in sw Ga....yeah I can not seem to find that any HP tire manufacturer even makes 315 or 325 in a 35 or 40 series. so either i settle for the 30s in the rear and keep my fingers crossed or get 305-35 and call it.
