So I Picked up an E70 X5M - Impressions

I decided to sell my "winter" vehicle, an E83 X3 M Sport. I just could not drive that car anymore after spending time in my F80.

Just purchased a 2012 X5M from a BMW CCA member, 55k Miles, with a few months of CPO remaining and an Eisenmann Race Exhaust.

Initial Impressions:

I've wanted this car since it came out. I drooled about it as i was a college kid in 2009 when it was released. Something about a full size SUV that can take on sports cars was just soooo badass to me. The car is batshit fast for an SUV.

Positives:

- Love the room, multi contour seats and general interior finishes. Feels really special with the leather dash and stitching everywhere. Even the premium sound is better than the HK in our cars

- Power delivery is outstanding when you step on it, Handling is surprisingly impressive and leaves me with much confidence around turns and in the wet

- General Looks, i think its understated but you can tell it something special

- Sound : Wow i really missed the sound of a V8, its just so deep

Negatives:

- Gas mileage is horrendous. I think i'm averaging 12.5 right now, and i'm not mashing on it hard

- Transmission programming. I believe it is programmed to stay in lower RPMs when cruising, so you need to mash the pedal to get it to go, thus burning tons of gas. This can be fixed with a simple toggle over to sport mode, but still. I'm also not used to a standard slushbox after having an amazing DCT transmission in the M3

Overall, i've found myself grabbing the keys to the X5M more than my M3 lately, Perhaps because i just got it? (honeymoon phase). Seriously considering consolidating at some point into a new X5M.

Congrats, I like the idea of the super power wagon/SUV as well.

X5 doesn't force you to worry about potholes, steep driveways, etc, so it makes sense you use it more often.

Personally, I think you should keep the current X5M and switch the M3 to a pure sports car. Its nice to have a "specialized" 2 car model, where 1 car is a family hauler and the other is a pure sports car.

Come drive my F86 before you consolidate and ditch the E70. Keep it. It's a beast. Other than the 8 speed and tech stuff, the E70 blows the F85 away. Problem fixed?

congrats on new M, it's beauty! I'm averaging 15.5 and that's mostly highway, when I first got it I was averaging 9.5 so there is a room for improvement!
Good luck and have fun!

congrats, not a vehicle for good mileage but, you're moving a 2.5T tank and for seeing best results get a tune up and drive it M mode all day, gas mileage is overrated

Coming from a 2010 e90 M3 I can totally relate to the OP. I thought my E90 V8 had bad gas milage!

The bright side is that you get better mileage doing more freeway driving, so get out there for long drives!

I can't wait for the weather to warm up and dry out so I can romp her up the hills to see her handle

Welcome to the club! Note, your gas mileage is not low,..."I'm averaging 12.5mpg",...this should be read as a "smile meter"! Your smile meter is quite high! Love to hear that exhaust!!!!

Edit: Those exhaust tips look bossy!

Congrats, I'm considering an x5m for my fleet maybe this week to replace my 4.8i

For what it's worth, I have a 2008 x5 4.8i and I routinely see about 12-13.5 around town and as high as 18mpg on 100% highway. Typically with mostly highway driving I'm seeing about 15.5. So SUV is not for those who's top priority is fuel economy. The x5 no matter the engine just ain't thrifty on the gas. P.s. Diesel, owners exaggerate, I have a BMW diesel as well.

I've seen 12-13MPG for my 4.8 also, for the 7 years I've owned it, FYI.

In reality it's only as bad as a 1/2 ton pickup. You should read the pickup drivers crying about fuel economy,

I plan to use x5 m as a tow vehicle when I purchase one. My 4.8i gets about 8mpg while towing, but that's because in,part I can't run it in 6th gear. I have to keep it in 5th on the flat and 4th and 3rd on hills and headwinds. I'm thinking the x5m will be able to stay in 6th and do a bit better.

When I feel guilty for killing polar bears I drive the d.

I completely agree about the transmission...it's always trying to force itself into 6th gear for the sake of gas mileage yet sport is too much for neighborhood use.

Wait until you start modding it, then you'll LOVE it like I'm doing more and more each day as I've just added a JB4 atop my stage 2 tune.

I too have a M3 and after I bought the E70 35d, I also find myself wanting to drive it over the M3, even 2 years into the ownership.

I think BMW designed a really fun and comfortable SUV. And it just looks fantastic, and you feel good driving it. That's why you prefer it to the M3.

The M3 is precision car, designed to do just a few things well.

Btw, that X5M is a sexy beast. Much better looking in E70 form than the F15 body
