There have been plenty of threads about this. The stock tires are summer tires and they will indeed suck in snow. What I am going to do is buy a set of winter tires (same size) and give it a try that way. I am told that it should work.

I've seen positive reports of people running all-season non-RFTs. The two that seem to be the most popular are the Conti Extreme Contact DWS and Toyo Proxes STII.
Search around on various x5 and x6 forums for those two tires and read the reviews. You won't have RFTs anymore, but they'll only set you back about $1k for a set. How's that for excellent? |

FWIW, I worried about this too. It wasn't nearly as bad as I worried it would be. I plan to run the stock tires down and replace them with a decent all season such as the Toyo Proxes STII or Conti DWS.

I have the '11 x5 5.0i with the sport pack and 20" wheels. I picked it up last novemeber, right before the massives snowstorms here in NJ. The car did fine, in fact it did better than my merc glk 4matic with all season tires.

To answer your question, they should last 30000 if your driving style doesn't change the bridgestone duelers are rated for 30000 miles and the dunlops those are only rated for 24000. You can extend that though if you are easy on them. |

I had an '08 with 20inch dunlops and the problem is the negative camber of the rear wheels. The inner edge wears down to the cords quick - 9000-10000 miles while the rest of the tires have great tread depth. I replaced the rears and asked them to dial out the negative camber and the second set lasted till I traded in at 36000 miles. I have bridgestone on my '11 and I'm going to see how they do. (for winter i have the 20 in pirreli's - work great) summer tires are okay in light snow if your careful. On ice, you just can't turn or stop, minor issues.
