Should i get the X5 or Q5
Alrite so i searched and didnt find a thread about this so sorry if there is one, my dad currently has the 09 335i sedan, he's had it for about 3 months and hes tired of not having room to put anything in it, he had 2 ml350's before the 335i, so he's going to trade it in for either the 2009 x5, or the audi q5, the thing is for about 45,000 he can either get the brand new 2010 q5 or a used 09 x5 with 6000 miles. He likes the interior of the q5 much better but says the x5 looks more manly from the outside. What do you guys have to say?

q5 is meant to compete against the x3. So the interior will be smaller in the q5 than in the x5. Both cars are great to drive but the steering feel in the q5 can be a bit vague due to its lightness but that means its easier to drive around town. I can't really say which is better for your dad because I'm not in his situation but if hes looking for space maybe an x5 would be better. You should bring him to a dealership to check both of them out to see if the space in the q5 is adequate for his needs. Hope this helps.

Don't spend 45k on a used '09 x5... spend 47k and get an '11 x5 35i basic.
Tell him to drive the Q5 and '11 35i back to back - once he feels the 300HP 8 speed auto in the '11 35i, he'll be hooked.

well he drove the q5 already and said it feels smoother than the x5 but that the steering feels artificial, i know he's leaning towards the x5 because he thinks the q5 is a little too small, he also wants to buy a jetski so the x5 has more towing capacity(not that the jetski weighs more than 4500pds anyways), the interior is def nicer in the q5,
theres no x5 around here new for 47, there was a 2009 x5 with 3000mi for 46,500, he also wants it to have the siderails |

If he's gonna tow you should go for the 2011 35d. With few options you should be able to get it for selling price around $50-52k then the $4,500 eco credit brings it down to $45-$47k.
If he absolutely doesn't want the diesel then you could still get the '11 35i for $47k (or less) but it doesn't have the roof rails...

Q5 now made in CHINA!!!
The quote below is from a Yahoo! Auto article posted today. I would never buy a Q5 because it very well could be made in CHINA!!!!! Holy cow, looks like Audi has turned over its future to the Chinese - if BMW does this, I am done with BMW and will go to Porsche.
"Imports are also hard to get because of limited supply lines, and how many production lines are open for a given model. Sales of Audi's popular Q5 SUV were limited earlier this year because the company had yet to open a second production line in China, forcing it to meet worldwide demand just off its Germany plant." |

What's the big deal? The computer you are using, your pants, your shoes, your internet router, your TV, your mop, your BMW, so what?

+1 on that. Everything is made in China now. Good quality stuff and bad quality stuff.
Porsche is owned over 50% by Volkswagen. And guess who owns most of Audi? Yup. Volkswagen! |

ah. we are on a roll are we? Volkswagen own Bugatti! . So if you are very lucky there might be a few Bugatti bolts in the Q5.
On the serious side, the Q5 looks like quite a solid car and I can imagine the dash is very pleasing. But as mentioned earlier, the Q5 is compared to the X3 not X5. The X5 must be compared to the Q7 (even though the Q7 is bigger). Did you check out the Q7 already? |

The q5 was supposed to be compared to the x3 but it blew the x3 out of the water so its compared to the x5 now and the q7 blew the x5 out of the water so its compared to the x6 now, the q7 is way to big and its much to expensive so its between the q5 or x5, im pretty sure he's leaning towards the x5 but who knows lol

The real question is do you want a BMW first and an SUV second?
Or an SUV first, and a BMW second. On the purchase spectrum, you have performance at one end, and cost at the other. One must decide the main driver for the purchase decision and compromise accordingly. It is not a question of which vehicle is better, that is very subjective. It is a question of what is most important to you. i.e. I chose and X6 because it combines what I like about the 5 series and and what I like about the X5 in one vehicle.

Go and drive both. I have recently purchased the twin turbo diesel X5. I drove all the similar class cars Q5, Q7, Touareg and the X5.
The build quality is similar on all, but the ride and handling is way sharper in the Bimmer - but you expect that with 275 fronts and 315 rears and less body roll than a WRX... Test driving is fun!! Z |

Q5 does not compete with the X5. It competes with the X3 (the Q7 competes with the X5).
Q5 is smaller, like the X3 (no 3rd row option). I've laid gthe seats down in my X5 and trust me, I could sleep in the back with another adult - it has that much space. Can't do that with a Q5. |
