E70 4.8 pump noise when stationary

My 08 4.8 X5 is making a strange pump like whirring sound after driving and then coming to a stop at traffic or lights etc. once you take off it stops. It sounds like a pump or similar sound. Not linked to engine rpm. I noticed if you turn off the AC while it's making the noise it will stop. So may be related to that, but what could it be that it's switching on at low rpm or stopped speeds? Any ideas?
Is there some engine vacuum pump or similar?

I have the service manual DVD but its so hard to learn about the car, more a reference of u already know what's there.
Thanks

That might be your AC compressor. Should get that checked out before damaging it, kinda pricey.

Good luck!

Didn't end up dropping it of to the dealer as the noise wasn't present that day, but after trying to find the source myself first, i discovered an oil leak from the vacuum pump, mounted to the front of the engine, right hand side bank.
this fits with my vacuum pump noise suspicion.
now i will get the dealer to investigate. since i have a smoking gun to point them too.
Ill let you know how it goes.

As an update, the vacuum pump replacement cured the noise.

I have a similar pump like pulsating noise, that seems to be associated with the HVAC...which parts (pump) were involved in the fix? Thanks!
