I am trying to gather information from all who have installed aftermarket catless downpipes, so your input would be greatly appreciated... I have heard a few complaints about a fuel odor entering the cabin with downpipes fitted to their cars. Can you confirm or deny this experience with your own vehicle?

My wife will be driving our X5M and she has a sensitive sense of smell.

Is there a significant difference in power/performance vs. having a tune only?

Is the difference worth the added cost?

Thanks,
Tim

Hey Tim,

Sorry I just noticed this post. Regarding the smell I have noticed very little entering the cabin when idling for long periods. Its does stink up the garage in the mornings (two of our cars are running catless downpipes so we're used to the smell now). Personally I love that smell.. The car is pretty loud on cold starts though, not sure if your wife will appreciate that. I have a free flow exhaust though, I think if you had a valved system that would help big time with reducing some smell and the noise on cold starts. From one car guy to another though, its sounds freaking EPIC!!!

Downpipes definitely add power, have not dyno'd my car yet but I estimate I picked up at least 20AWHP or 30-40 crank hp with the dp's. Its feels quicker and sounds awesome! I ran a 12.2 with my dinan tune in the 1/4 mile and will be taking it out when things warm up again with the velos setup now. I feel like it will break into the 11's now. I'll be posting a detailed review in the spring so keep an eye out for that. Hope that helps brother!

Thank you. louder is not an issue to her (she actually likes to hear a good exhaust note). More power is good too - I do have concerns/reservations about gaseous odors entering the cabin though.

Yea, I can say that its not enough to bother me personally but it could be different for your wife. I think if she likes the smell of classic hotrods then it should be no issue at all.. Seeing that you posted she is VERY sensitive then it might not be the call.. BTW very jealous of those BBS wheels you got haha

I should update this thread.. I ended up installing them on my car instead of selling!

Sound=BEAST. I have the dinan free flow exhaust paired with the velos catless downpipes. It sounds really, really good. Dinan is one of the few exhausts for this platform that makes the car sound like a meaty v8 and the downpipes amplified that even more. Sounds very guttural and menacing. Hoping to have some nice videos with my go pro in the spring on here so keep an eye out for that.

Power wise, its a bit stronger than just the tune +exhaust. I have not been able to use launch control since i'm on the winter setup right now. I will be making a detailed review with 1/4 mile times in the spring so keep an eye out for that as well!
