What a shame....very disappointed in BMW. Never thought they would take marketing this far in order to attract the the SUV/family crowd. Their ability to keep sports cars pure as possible has always made them stand out, esp. the M line....now they feel they have to compete with the Porsche Cayanne and Mercedes AMG. What happend to the M motto, "no form without function" They need to stick with coupes and sedans. No way an SUV will ever handle as well.

Ever driven a Cayenne Turbo S or a 05-06 x5 4.8iS? I can understand your concerns as keeping the ///M line all high performance sedans/coupes but in the SUV category there are only few that can truly compete.

on topic: The X5 ///M looks like its going to be great. The Fender line reminds me a lot of my old 4.8iS that I loved so much.

Plastic is cheaper then retooling for new rear fender, else they fear it looks too much like the rear fender of the x6!

Yes. I have driven the Cayenne Turbo S. It's the fastest SUV I've ever driven but still not for me.....to each his own. I just hope that in this economic slump the M division keeps themselves focused on true sports cars and not marketing ploys to boost sales. Otherwise, it will be tough for the division to recover it's exclusivity with true driving enthusiasts.

Have you driven an 08+ Cayenne Turbo with PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control)? The driving experience is UNREAL. You truly cannot believe you are behind the wheel of a 2.5 ton SUV. It handles like a 911 NO JOKE. Go look at the handling figures for the 08 Cayenne Turbo with PDCC you'll see it can outhandle an E46 M3...The numbers don't lie.

If the ///M X5 & ///M X6 can perform similarly then i'll be glad to have the ///M badge on it cause then it'll truly deserve it!

Not sure if the one I drove had PDCC but still believe it defeats the purpose of the M division. I was not that impressed...too much added weight. As I said.....to each his own. I'll save my SUV days for off roading or camping trips.

In case you missed the news lately they do have to compete Porsche/Mercedes,attract the SUV family crowd and anyone else they can. The car world (along with many others) as it was is gone , now it's survival. The melt down isn't just a "wall st or housing " thing the entire world is going to feel the effects. Manufacturers will make what they can sell, period.

Point taken and that is why I mentioned the economic slump in the previous post. Well, I guess it was inevitable. Like I said though, I personally will never buy any SUV for the track. In my opinion they should be left for soccer moms, off roading, and those who would like a sports car but have no alternative.

well agree on that SUV's are not for the track, for that you need serious race car.

Well, M cars are and always have been track cars that can be used as daily drivers....thats the whole purpose, it's what many of us do and why we choose these cars....not just for show like the Cayenne S etc. No SUV for me either.
