Check Engine light

Has anyone had their X6 in for service yet because their check engine light is on? Mine is on, among my other problems, and is going in on the 2nd of January to get fixed when I return from vacation.

I know my service advisor told me that they had another X6 in for service right now with a check engine light on as well but he was not sure what their problem was yet.

None in the UK reported with this fault, sorry to here this, it may just be a sensor playing up.

Sorry to hear that shenard - your problems seem to grow with that 50i. I've not had any issues with my 35i - had the 15,000 mile service done 2 weeks ago and other than the dealer not being able to answer any questions around upgrading the iDrive software release version, everything else was good.

Cheers, Anteater

Do you have some problems with engine start?I ve saw paper from bmw service to call back all the x6 if they expirence engine sign

i think that a problem is in a fuel pump... My friend had also a at firat engine sign on the control panel and then he later on he went to a bmw dealer in they had to chane a fuel pump.

Hope that with yours is just a sensor....

5.0 is new engine so not surprised there are more issues. I am sure they will get them resolved.

So far (knock on wood) my 50i hasn't had any problems, have about 6000 miles on it (most of it spirited driving). Only warning that has come ( just today) was the one that tells me to add quart of oil ( still don't like being dipstickless).

Shenard sorry to here about this.

Shenard,
I guess I spoke too soon , after we left restaurant tonight my check engine light is on (wasn't before dinner). I assume the little icon on the top cluster that looks like an engine is the check engine light. No messages in idrive service info all status say everything is "ok". Guess I have to take it to dealer in the morning.

We will find out , writing this sitting at dealers drinking latte (on their dime). They didn't think it's a big issue. I will update end of day when I get car back.

Remember that the check engine light will illuminate if the gas cap is not on tightly. Onced tighted it could take a day or two to clear.

Doulbe check before a trip to the dealer.

yup checked that and the oil cap both were tight. first thing dealer did was check gas cap and confirm it was tight. I find it odd that there are visual(idrive) control messages for just about everything but nothing when check engine comes.

Update:
Well just received call from dealer the DMTL pump (Leak Diagnosis Pump) was bad and they had to replace it . Research shows this is part of the fuel system that it turns on the check engine light when you leave your gas cap off (so Chuck you were close in your diagnosis). So the system works just would be nice if they put out message.

I get car back tomorrow (pump has been replaced but they are waiting on some rivets for the fender which are due in the morning).

rivets for the fender?

I am sure it is not as bad as it sounds.

Shenard ,
let us know, I don't understand these kind of quality problems.
I expect there might be issues with things that are new to the X6
(50i engine,DPC,etc) but since a lot of it is parts from the X5 seems to me those should not have any issues.

Another Update:
I picked up the X6 from the dealer this morning, went to brunch with my wife and after leaving restaurant check engine light was on again. I drove it to the dealer and they are looking at it now. I looked at the paper work and the received fault codes that said it was DMTL pump and that they replaced it.
Less than thrilled canceled trip to LA because of this.

Update #3
Dealer checked the car ,found some "fault codes having to do with grounding" and think they might have fixed it but car needed to be driven 40-60 miles to find out. Bottom line " since the 50i engine is so new there isn't a 'plan' from BMW to deal with this". dealer will have a 'plan' from BMW in "about a week or week and a half".

I had the choice of letting the mechanics/foreman drive it for the 40 to 60 miles or I could take the car back and drive it myself. I think you know which I chose. I said "I'll drive it for the 40 to 60 miles and if the light comes back on I will call you up and see if you have 'plan' from bmw yet".

I finally get a free week with trip planned to LA and my nice new $76k car blows it out of the water.

There is absolutely no reason for a car this new to be having these kind of problems unless BMW is not paying attention to quality (same thing happened to Mercedes and it cost them customers).

If it comes back on after 40 to 60 miles I'll let you know.

Join the club. My car has been in service 2 times already and a total of 29 days. The first time it took them 14 days because they could not get it to take all of the updates and were waiting on several parts. Apparantly none of the mechanics had worked on an X6 yet and when they replaced my power steering pump the first time they had to remove the entire intercooler among other Turbo parts and wanted to take their time to be careful. The second time when they replaced steering angle sensor and steering modules they had to call in a regional service engineer and it took them 15 days. Good thing I was on vacation for 9 of those days.

Getting very frustating because now I have to take it back in on the 2nd for this check engine light and then eventually back in to try and fix my steering issue for the last time but I will have to contact BMW NA before I take it in for that issue.

Guess that is what we get for buying the first year of a new model from BMW, especially one that is twin-turbo. BMW should have a little better quality than this, especially for an $80k vehicle

I understand that the 50i is a new engine and I would think before releasing it bmw would have trained a least one person in each region to act as mentor and to train others. I agree piss poor for an $80k car.

Last result ended up with them replacing a sensor, we will see if that fixed problem.
