Creaking Tailgate
I recently took my 2013 X5 in to have a creaking noise looked at. At any speed, the slightest bumps in the road make a very noticeable creak sound from the rear of the vehicle. The service center said they took all the trunk panels off and tightened them. They said they drove the car and the noise went away. I picked up the car and immediately noticed the noise. I plan on bringing the car back, but didn't return right away because the only workers remaining at the time were receptionists.
Has anyone had issues with noises coming from the trunk? I think it's the tailgate, as if it's shifting around when driving. Thanks, kk-bmw |

Known issue. I had multiple visits for same issue, to no avail.
In the end, I myself realigned the upper and lower tailgates and the creak went away. The tailgates were misaligned from factory, even visible with naked eye. In addition, I have isolation tape wrapped to the center ring that uppper tailgate attaches to when closed. That took care of metal clunk noise during cornering. Hi have the same exact problem and its annoying the hell out of me.
I cant re-create the sound by hitting the back seats or panels. I hear it only during cornering and bumps. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try the electrical tape with the seat latches and see what happens. If it's not fixed, I'll have my dealer take another look at it on Wednesday when my X5 goes in for the third time because of this creak and limp mode (another thread coming on that!)
I'll keep you guys updated. |

When I took it to the dealership they couldn't figure it out and wrote it off as an intermittent issue.
I ended up taking it to an independent shop (Coast Motorwerke in Huntington Beach) and they knew right away what the issue was. Their remedy was putting a special grease on the tailgate and hatch latches. It did the trick and the noise went away. |

i solved my tailgate creak by removing bottom tailgate plastic cover, removing the metal casing that holds the catch mechanism(motor) that pulls the upper tailgate shut and pushing the catch inwards a few mm and tightening everything up. i wrap every single metal latch including those that hold the back seats with heavy duty duct tape since i dont have felt tape. silence at last and only creak during body flex. i have sensitive ears and i think all the noise problems that the e70 have can be solved! good luck!

I temporarily fixed my creaking issue. I put electrical tape around the latches where both the upper and lower portions of the tailgate close. Hopefully my dealer will have a more permanent solution but this works for now.
Thanks for the help, guys! |

I actually wrapped a thin layer of felt carpeting, maybe 1/16" thick by the width of the latch and secured it with an adhesive, around the latch. This approach has seriously lessened the frequency of the creaking. Now it's a couple times a day, versus over any bumps in the road, with a lot less intensity!
It seems to me to be caused by the exceptional tolerances allowed in this latch/joint, and with any flexing/twisting of the vehicle the sound is attenuated in this region. |

My tailgate was creaking terribly to the point where I was losing my mind. Dealer was zero help. Tried the electrical tape on the latch repair as recommended in this thread. Creaking is GONE! ...thanks guys.

Curious if you tried my advice in post #15 above. It did lessen the frequency of the sounds in our '12 35d. But because of the large single piece of plastic covering the rear lower tailgate, I'm assuming the plastic just is flexing with the vehicle suspension. I don't see a cure-all for this other than covering the plastics with carpet.
