X5M performance ?

I just did a test drive on a new 2011 X5M (37 miles on odometer), and i was somewhat disappointed in the power. Overall i loved the car except it didn't feel as quick as i thought it would be. Any comments would be appreciated as i am very seriously considering a purchase. Thanks

What were you exactly disappointed at? You must be comparing the performance of the x5m to some other vehicle to make u disappointed. Remember the car does weigh a lot
I've had the car for almost over 2 months with about 3k miles on it, nothing to complain about to this day.

Most car magazines said 0-60 times were in the low 4 seconds. Car I test drove just didn't feel that quick. Don't get me wrong this is an awesome vehicle. i previously drove a 2007 M5.

might have been the settings that x5m had while you were testing it.

Compared to an E60 M5, it would feel different in two big ways.
One the torque is across the RPM range you don't get the slam in the back when you hit 5k like the M5. Plus the AWD gives you so much more traction, it doesn't feel like always trying to break the back end loose.

Due to weight and power delivery, I can understand your first impressions.

You need to have the M button on and the tranny in sport mode. Otherwise the M does seem to take a little bit of time to decide to get up and going.

It is very fast, it just does not seem to feel that way. It is also kind of quiet even at full throttle..........The truck is very fast.......Steve

X5M

I think a lot of it has to do with perception. The X5M is heavy, and you sit up high (as opposed to a go-cart sized sports car). But your perception is your reality.

sounds like someone forgot to press the "M" button on the steering wheel, sport on the shifter and edc as well...the "M" button automatically pokes the furious weasel in your engine bay with a wooden stick and becomes a whole other car IMO

The truck drives like my grandma's wagon until you press the "M" button and move the shifter to "Sport". Once you do that it is like Nikki's nasty sister.

It really does have dual personality. While in non-M and with transmission in normal it is always up shifting. When you step on it there is a bit of a lag before it will downshift. Then it has to usually go down 3 gears.

The ESS tune adds significant power around 3k RPM.

Better yet, drive it with manual/paddle shifting. Not faster than in M mode, but it allows you to hold a gear and mash on the throttle at the rev range you want to gauge power in. This beast will hold it's ground against many exotic sports cars in the 0-60 department.

That is what makes the X5-6M so amazing is that it does stuff a 5000+ LB vehicle should not do. And I have an exotic, so I know from personal experience that this SAV is very special......Steve

Don't forget, all BMW transmissions have a 200 mile learning period that could effect the initial performance.

It could be that it still needs breaking in too on the engine side of things.

I was on I-95 on Monday, driving to work, carpooling with friend (he drives a 2011 M3). I was talking and then looked in my mirror and forgot what I was saying and shouted "Oh Sh__!!" I thought it was an X6M coming up on my @$$ like a damn flood, but it was an X5M. The driver cut off from behind me at the last minute and went by me and kept on cruising through traffic. For the first I actually started pondering the idea of stopping my Lumma project and getting an X5M. lol

I haven't really road tested the ///M, I drove the 35i and it had some kick. I can't wait to test drive it when I go on my R&R in a few weeks... I bet it's like a rocket with all that torque, compared to my previous M3 sounds like I'm going to enjoy my baby hauler lol.

the power it has is amazing.

the only i could say is that you may not feel the speed so much because its a big heavy and quiet SUV, but rest assured its fast and has gobs of torque

I agree. It's a combination of the quiet cabin with no wind noise on top of a tt-V8 that spools up effortlessly.
