F10 M5 turbo and header swap

I'm still curious as to why there isn't an X5 Engine / Exhaust / Drivetrain Modification subforum, but I digress.

Now that I've got your attention...I have yet to find a thread where anyone has done this, but I'm curious the gains to be had by doing so since the parts are different, the F10 puts out more power, etc etc. Just need to find an M5/M6 that's been wrecked now

Here's an article highlighting the differences between the N63 and S63 - http://www.***********.com/content.p...and-S63-motors
Here's a few articles highlighting the differences between an S63 and S63tu - http://www.***********.com/content.p...nd-valvetronic or this http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=548345

Seems we'll ultimately never hit their power levels due to high compression and Valvetronic, but at the same time the S63 itself has room for improvement via factory parts. Things like gaskets for the turbos and headers are compatible, so seems there's nothing stopping from swapping those on. Intercoolers seem like they'd be a harder swap due to space constraints, but I'm not looking into my engine bay right now, so I'm not sure. Part of what prompted this search is wanting to see if an MSR intake could fit on our trucks, but then again that'd require me looking inside the engine. If anything I'm just posting this since I took a few minutes to pull up all the info...while at work Night all

I wouldn't rule out the new X5M's either. Might be a better fit. I've been looking into this myself, but not sure if I want to risk the $$$ to see if they fit. Might just grab a pp performance header down the line and be done with it since they were made for our cars.

For a while $$Dinan$$ sold free-flowing intake manifolds for the 99-01 M62TU engines...push came to shove and they we're nothing more than BMW factory 95 M60 manifolds that they'd just put their name onto. I haven't seen the PP-Performance ones, but unless they're custom tubular manifolds, I can't imagine they'll be that much better than stock from an M5...and PP isn't cheap on anything either, so they're $ to HP ratio is absurd.

Haha...completely forgot I replied on a thread about their system a month ago. Called it! PP didn't make anything for our cars, they just bought BMW headers and etched some numbers on them. The screwing over owners of the ///M badge never ends.

Found an eBay seller parting a fire damaged F10 M5. Offer made for turbos and headers, no luck on the intercoolers. The M5 has a higher compression engine, he's got one for $7500 but it's got damage to the external block case itself. Hmm...worlds first X5M 6spd swap as well? I'm sure it'll be 10x harder than the 6spd swap I did in my 740iL, but someones gotta be the first...

Turbo's got sold, headers still might be in the mix if he agrees on my price. While looking at the turbos, the cooling system is more metal vs rubber lines on the X5M, but as best as I can tell, the mounting locations common to the turbo look the same...I just wonder why the difference.

So you going to pull the trigger on the headers? If so let me know asap if they fit. It's a mod I've been eying for quite awhile, but don't want to take the $$$ risk to find out.

Through talking to one of the two custom turbo producers for the S63, the turbo mounting flange is different between the X5M and M5. The M5 has better turbos, so it'd require both turbos and headers, figuring out the water feed lines (both bolted to the turbos and thebmetal M5 lines overtop the engine vs the rubber lines on the X5M) and then maybe some other fitment isssues like wastegates. Not to say I'm NOT still interested, but it's not just a bolt and go swap for the headers.

I think if you're only trying to upgrade the headers, you're better off just getting a set made to fit the X5 turbos.

$500 for just the headers, $2000 for the whole setup. I'm sure custom headers alone would be far more than buying a used M5 setup and just adapting the water feed lines. Turbo moding companies have said that after their upgrades, there's no differences between the two turbos, but in the bigger picture, upgrading the headers, even with minimal gains, would probably still help.

If you can get it for 2k it'd be worth it but otherwise upgrading the turbo would be the most cost effective. Though the limiting factor will be fuel as usual on the direct injected engines.

With Meth and upgraded turbos I wonder if the S63 could out perform the S63tu due the the lower factory compression allowing higher boost?

Though there's almost no interest in pushing past tune and dp's on this platform. I only know of one with the Pure turbos on it and they are having unrelated issues last I heard.

I'd LOVE to push past the norm for our platform. Do you have links to the X5M running Pure Turbos?

Have you talked to BBi motor sports? Apparently they did this back in 2013 and claimed 700 on pump gas. I doubt they made that much though. Here is the article.

I've IM'd a few people and talked on a couple of threads about the header swap...it's a direct bolt-on minus there being a different headers-to-turbo flange between the M5 turbos and X5M turbos. That's a road I'll cross when I get upgraded turbos as I'll likely do headers and turbos at the same time.

I'm just waiting for another set to pop up. I was uninformed last time and some guy was gonna sell me the headers for $500, but then I learned later I'd need the turbos as well. I've got my eyes open. In the meantime I'm doing simpler mods...intake tubing, muffler delete then adding an x-pipe and resonators and then a simple meth setup for cleaning since my buddy following me one day said I looked like I'm rolling coal.

Pulled the trigger on a set now just waiting to setup my shop

likely be in 2-3 months before have shop up and ready to install plan is to run JB4 and run a custom map targeting 21+ psi and add meth injection.

turbos and manifold are from F10 M5

Now I just need the new x5m tranny to go with the shifter I bought last year haha

I’m stoked to hear the exhaust note after this

Mine are still sitting in a box but I've got a coworker/neighbor who's going to coat them for me before installation, so I'm kinda waiting on that as well.

I've considered a tranny swap in the form of going with the DCT from an F10 M5 but your idea or mine will require custom wiring that I have NO clue how to do.

Yea I’m not sure how it’s going to work as far as wiring goes ...

Maybe just bring entire harness and wiring ... including the dash

See where this goes
