Nav upgrade
I have a 2011 50i and am interested in upgrading to the 2014 nav bit with the 3-D mountains, buildings, etc. My SA tells me I cannot be upgraded such that I get the 3-D graphics, and that I can only get more current maps withy existing graphics. I thought otherwise. Any experience here? Thanx.

IMO the 3D building is stupid... at least on BMW Navs.especially when you have a lot of buildings surrounding you.. it is hard to distinguish your route with the building graphics in the way...

I just downloaded the 2014 maps and will install tonight (don't have a 32Gb flash drive handy so need to pick one up).
What specific town or city would you like to know about regarding buildings?

How to download the 2014 update myself instead of taking it to the dealer?

Care to share how you downloaded the nav update, and how you'll install it using a 32gb stick? I sure would love to pay less for the update than the dealer wants! I think he said the update is about $250 plus they'll charge me something for their time to "install" it. So I'm guessing it will end up costing in the neighborhood of $400-$500. Thanks! Download the files, uncompress and put it on a stick (takes about an hour). In your glove box is a USB port. Plug in the flash drive and push your start button. The system will recognize that you have newer map data, ask for your code which you then enter and the transfer starts. It takes about an hour to transfer the 22Gb. The iDrive then reboots and off you go. We have a new shopping center (not yet complete) not far from me and they altered a couple of intersections to cater to it. That is shown on the new maps and was not on the 2011 maps that I had prior. I'll look for the 3D thing this evening. I'll maybe look around Colorado and post a screenshot.

Where to get it
I just bought the USB new map at Tischer BMW (GETBMWPARTS?COM) for $55. With shipping. I have a 2013 x5 diesel (2013).
They want $195 for the FSC code. Look around for Andrew at alpine.com and you will be very happy. Inexpensive and very quick. FSC worked like a charm and I had the car serviced yesterday and no questions or comments. Look at bimmer world and the E90 forum for him. Tischer can be found here as well. USB goes in the glovebox, Idrive asks for FSC code and 45 minutes later you have anew map. I really like the night vision screen. Gray with color, even during the day. |
