E70 X5M trans. Malfunction (SOLVED)
I was driving my X5M on the highway pretty aggressively, crusing at around 100-130mph in M (DSC OFF, Sport Manual) and sometimes when I'm in 5th and hit the accelerator, it randomly jumps to 6th gear. This happened about 3 times on my way to west palm beach, then I'm nearing the track, and I go to pass someone so I downshift from 6th to 3rd and pedal to the metal, shift to 4th and my rpms just reved to 6k and the trans. Went into failsafe without engaging 4th. And I get all the heartbreaking messages that we all dread to see. (Trans. Malfunction drive moderate) pull over restart the car and works wonders. But sometimes I still get the weird 5th to 6th jump without hitting gears when I throttle up.
Any suggestions? Nick Last edited by DatX5M; 02-15-2018 at 09:44 PM.. |

Bump for fluid changes...I'm guessing we're gonna start seeing more posts like this as they get older/higher mileage, much like when I was regularly on the E38 forums after people waited until 100k+ before doing it vs every 50k regardless of what BMW says about being lifetime.
How's your battery holding up? This could also be another typical BMW gremlin but this does sound more mechanical. |

Thanks for all the replies, I took it to bmw for their lovely “diagnostic test” after it happened again this week :/ they said hey added a quart of oil, just in case as directed by their silly trouble shooting guide. I need to do the oil change in both tranny and transfer case is there a DIY guide?
Batt. I have a brand new aftermarket battery Duracell AMG H8 Had it coded by bmw after having low voltage outputs to all systems.(bc I decided to change it thinking if it was the identical one no coding was required. I played myself had to pay 100$ for coding that too) That caused the computers only drawing up to 29.9% and the batt life/ charge level was at 93.3%. My guess is that it could be one of the selonoids on the megatronics, or the megatronics itself going out. Could also be related to a fluid press loss in the trans. (No leaks though) But that would cause the temp of the tranny to surpass the 89c it’s camping at all day while driving, 95C being the threshold before getting warnings on the OBC I will post the codes I got when i get a chance for future references for everyone Will also call ZF transmissions to gather a little information |

Solution to malfunctions and gear jumps
ZF transmissions referred to Best Motor Works & Sports in Gainesville, Florida where Mikey has extensive background knowledge on ZF transmissions.
He diagnosed the problem to be a loss in pressure in the megatronics solediod. My case happened to be in number (5) of (6) replaced all 6 soledoids, replaced the bushings inside, a rear sensor gasket in the trans that is notorious for leaks with an oil change in both transfer and transmission as indicated every 60,000miles No more rough 2-3 kick shifts too Couldn't be happier hope this helps anyone who comes across this as our miles skyrocket! |

Edit: Also glad to know this isn't an isolated issue. Only had the M just over a couple months and always wondered if anyone else had the same 2-3 shift grabs. I only notice when in M mode manually shifting though. In drive every shift is smooth.

That 2-3rd obnoxious kick is getting old. You be cruising slow around the parking lot and all of a sudden “bamm” head flying back. Hoping no one sees ya.

Not just the 6hp, the 8hp has this too as mine is getting pretty bad. I think it's a ZF issue....Time to reset the adaptations and see if it helps, if that doesn't then time for new solenoids. I already installed a Sonnax zip kit in the valve body and that helped alot of the shifts but still crappy 2 to 3. Has anyone reset the adaptations on theirs and did it help the 2 to 3 shift?

I've had this happen, it also affects reverse gear at time if you're getting a code which states drum E.
I had the whole trans rebuilt by Level10. Issue was with the clutches in drum E, all burnt up. I had them replace all of them. |

Changing the solenoids and resetting adaptations did the trick on mine, now at 155k miles. With that being said, I can feel it slip a little in some gears on full throttle pulls after adding a tune to it, with so many miles on it to be expected and Ultimately I plan to rebuild it. If I drove it normal I could probably get another 100k out of it though as installing new solenoids made it feel nearly new again. Finding solenoids for the ZF8HP was a challenge though.
