Trans. Malfunction Error

So I'm selling my BMW X5 4.8 and have a really nice couple that want to purchase so they agree and drive it home, on the way home they get a Trans Malfunction error and send me a picture. They turn it off and back on and that works, but it happens again. This has never happened to me and when they returned it today they said it was fine all the way to my house. They had a tech check it out and even change the battery but it happened again. I'm guessing that it's just a sensor, any suggestions? Has this happened to you?

Lots of possibilities. You need to have the codes read to see whats actually going on.

No codes beyond that that I'm aware of? Doesn't seem to be a transmission problem. Is there a sensor or something?

You probably need to use a BMW specific scanner to read all the codes, not just the OBD codes on the engine.
First obvious thing, how is the fluid level and condition, has it been changed ever? BMW say its lifetime, but should really be changed under 100K.
lots of issues can crop up due to old hardened rubber seals between the valve body and transmission itself, or solenoids.
