2010 x5 hvac issues

X5 with about 105k miles and 4 zone climate control.

It seems like no matter what I do, at least one of the vents will blow hot air. And I mean heated air, not just ambient temp. So even if its freezing cold outside, the hvac will blow hot air even with the thermostat control turned all the way down to 60f.

Sometimes I can get cold air out of the vents and the AC might even work on the lowest fan speed once in a while and eventually cool the interior a little bit, but in general one or more of the vents is blowing hot air.

I do not think this is an issue with the AC since I cant even get reliably cold air when the outside temp is below freezing. How do I diagnose this without a code reader?

It's likely that your engine partitions have failed. They are made of some ridiculously frail plastic-like material that crumbles with age. When they start to fall apart, heat from the engine compartment enters the HVAC intake resulting in warm/hot air coming into your cabin even when your temperature setting is at 60°.

There are the three large pieces that typically fail, but there are also smaller pieces at the very outer ends that also fail. I and many others have used cheap Chinese pieces as replacements. They can be found on places like Ali Express, Ebay, Amazon, etc.

You potentially need items 14,10 (L/R), & 18 (L/R)

Thanks for the info! That's the last thing I would have considered.

Your pic is very small and I'm unable to zoom in with any clarity.

Do you have any links to better pics or more specific info on the pieces I need?

Also, is there a way to verify my existing partitions are indeed in bad shape? Everything under the hood looks pristine visually.
