X5M KWV3

Anyone having any "popping" noises coming from their KW's during slow speed turns. Just had the KW's installed and my installer says this is normal on KW's. It's the coils unwinding on either the collar or top hat. Other than that the KW's are flawless but I just can't accept it. My installer said their may be a teflon sleeve you can install between the coil or top hat.

Anyone experience this or came up with a solution?

I've had KW's on an M5, M3 and 335 - and all were perfect without any noise.

Called KW again. Tom from KW said if you lower the hieght more than maximum allowable hieght you'll get popping noises from the coils while turning at slow speeds. I'll check the maximum allowable lowered height tonight and get back to you guys.

Please do. I've been on the fence about coils forever. Just hoping it will ride close to stock

I was on the fence about the purchase as well for the longest time. I purchased a used set from a fellow forum member here. I have no regrets even with the popping noise, which i'm sure is fiaxble. The X5 feels so much more planted and controllable. Make the move you won't regret it.

Is anyone still experiencing a popping noise on their KW's? I noticed this for the first time earlier today pulling in to park on a flat surface. That sound made me cringe...

Yes - I was the first to complain to Tom at KW - his response nonetheless was "well you are the only one in like 200 sets we've sold"

That was back in 2011...since then there have been a few members complaining of this.

It's called spring bind or coil bind...I posted a video on another thread which shows the issue clearly

that is unacceptable for a $4000+ set of springs.

You'll probably have to raise it if the noise won't go away.

Hmm. that is odd, and agreed that is not an extreme drop at all.

You could try re-clocking the springs and see if that helps at all.

I presume everything is torqued down properly? My wife's M3 is on V3s and we had some noise going over bumps when we first had them installed. Turns out the large nut on the passenger shock tower was not properly torqued down. Once that was snugged-up they were perfect.

Hey OP not sure if you had this resolved. I don't have V3s on my X5M but I do have that popping sound as well. Makes me think it may be something else. Doubtful though.

I'm putting the Dinan springs on next week. Not quite as elaborate of a set up as the V3s, but I will be interested to see if I still get that noise

what is the drop with the dinan springs? Can't find it on their web site. Where are you getting it done? I use Norwood.

It's pretty conservative..about an inch all around. They fix the self leveling module as well I believe to compensate. Also replace all the bushings as well.

The labor time is stupid though. Dinan quotes 8 hours, which means the labor is more than the parts!!! I want to do coilovers on this car, but need this to be more to toned down than my M3.

I get all my work done in Norwell. I used to go to Steve and Matt, who I still respect a great deal. However, the service aspect was awful and Norwell really takes great care and pride in their service. Plus they give a pretty good deal on the Dinan parts which I can't complain about.

Send me a PM anytime and we can meet up.
