BMW X5 M vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

I have to say, this is one amazing lineup of vehicles for a road test. Hats off to Car and Driver magazine for putting this together! You have to read this road test. Here are some select quotes

Quote:
Astoundingly quick, period, come to think of it. The slowest of the lot—if slow is the right word—rumbles to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.
Quote:
The best EPA ratings belong to the Porsche—12 mpg city
Quote:
BMW and the Porsche achieve comparable chassis rigidity at much lower weight
Quote:
For a vehicle in this weight class, the test-track numbers are simply incredible. But the X5’s responses in the world of fast curves, decreasing radii, and quick transitions are even more so.

i never understand why they always put in the range rover, which will always clearly lose (unless if they do some off roading test which it could win), instead of the ML63

I can't understand what the hell was the Grand Cherokee doing there! It was third only because of the price...

well performance wise i feel like the grand cherokee is MUCH closer to the X5M, Cayenne and ML 63 than the range rover.

i heard the new rovers have made a lot of progress but i own the previous sport supercharged and let me tell you how much of a waste that was, should of went with the regular version, or maybe even something else.

I'll tell you why the srt8 was in there.

Its a hell of a vehicle for $43k 0-60 4.4 sec
and it handled slightly above average for a suv.

Reason why i know this is i owned one for a year and just recently traded her in for a 08 m3 E90.

I used to love when guys pulled up beside me in any sportscar and thought they would just leave me standing at the stop light. I gave them a run for their money, and sometimes even won. Yes after 70-80 mph they'd catch up to me but 0-60 i owned them

Typical Car & Driver review. The best vehicle gets second because of price.

The Cayenne murdered the X5M in handling tests.

at some point price has to be a part of the equation; you own an M3 that would be beaten by a 911S in handling but is the 911S at $30k-50k more (depending on options) worth the slight handling increase???

IMO I'm at the point where i wont go higher then $50k for a car in this economy.
I earn a good living for the field i'm in, but mr. obama might be putting a damper on that so i will tighten my belt and slow down on my spendings a bit.

I would never pay that much more money for a car which is pretty close in performance. (porsche)

The M3 in comparison to my old srt8 gc is night and day when it comes to overall performance. I do miss the trunk space and my frequent trips to home depot for mulch in the jeep.

The range rover i think doesnt come close to the perfomance of the other three sport utes. Its too top heavy with not enough body (frame) rigidity
The jeep at times was too stiff so when i was at a high speed and went over uneven pavement she used hop to the sides alot.

Not sure where you got this.
Edmunds test of the Cayenne TurboS: Slalom (mph)
66.2
Skid Pad Leteral acceleration (g)
0.89
Their test of the X6M (they have not tested X5M but results should be very similar):
Slalom (mph)
68.6
Skid Pad Leteral acceleration (g)
0.91

Cayenne Turbo S
Lane change- 66.0 mph
Skipad- 0.91g
Braking- 158 feet

X5M
Lane change- 63.3 mph
Skipad- 0.89g
braking- 162 feet

The X5M just beats the Cayenne in the 1/4 by .1, same mph.

But after 1/4 mile the Cayenne Tubo pulls ahead, with a quicker 0-130mph.

Like I said the best performance full-size suv gets second because of price. (Bonus, it can off-road like a range rover.)

How do you figure? CD had the total points gap at 16 and the price difference was only 4 of those. Couple that with the fact that skid pad numbers are usually dubious and the braking numbers were only slightly better because of the outrageously priced ceramic brake option.

Bottom line here.....both are amazing vehicles with spectacular handling and great brute force. Although the X5M ain't cheap, unless you are looking for off road capability, the BMW comes off as excellent value.
