Turbo sizing for Heat shield
Im trying to figure out what the Turbo size is so I can order the correct heat shield for the turbos.
DEI shows the following chart, does anyone have the measurement on hand? |

Unless something has changed, Pure Stage 2 maintain the same casting/OEM size and just up the compressor/exhaust wheel size with some mild porting. Dont think you'll need one.

It will definitely benefit from the shield tho...these things emit so much heat. |

PTP makes a turbo blanket specifically for the X5M. I have it on mine and it fits quite well, and insulates very well.

Not by my measurements. The blanket covers the sides and top of the exhaust housing on the turbos. The heads are shielded by a radiant shield and the turbo blanket. The underside of the turbos in the engine valley have another heat shield same as before. The under hood temps are significantly reduced and the engine temps on the sides are as well. Which is what I suspect your after. there is only wrapping/coating, trying to make a generic blanket fit or PTP.
These are the right product for everyone and after a year of use I can't say its really made any differences other than significantly lower under hood temps and possibly helping the lines over the top of the engine live longer. I also run without the noise cover. I have thread on this, with measurements/pics, too lazy to find it at the moment. I did checks before and after with a heat gun, no temp increase in the engine bay anywhere checked, including under the turbos shot where the oil lines feed in. I am also running a low temp thermostat, and heat shielding on all the lines in the turbo area. Last edited by Thecastle; 03-05-2021 at 12:36 PM.. |

Some PTP fitting pics and temp differences and warning about turbo blankets and cheap down pipes. |

I think I'll just either ceramic coat the hot side of the turbo or get those individual t25 shields. I think with the blanket the heat has no where to go as it covers even the back side over the downpipes a bit as shown in the pic in the link you posted.

I can't say how well executed any of these really are for performance as that wasn't my goal. My goal was to reduce under hood temps as much as possible to keep the plastics from degrading. I use my X5M as a tow vehicle so the engine lives under constant boost and high loads and long stretches' of full throttle are not uncommon on grades, which produce a lot of heat. I was also after a bit quicker spool for the turbos, and maybe a reduction in limp mode's from low boost. All I can say is with my infra red thermostat, it really worked. The car is in for service at the moment so I can't take any new measurements (power steering groaning and leaky injectors).
I'm pretty convinced that turbo blankets of any kind are a good idea. But I think your concern of trapping heat in the block is legitimate, as 1000+hp, M5's have had problems with damaging the back to cylinders. |
