Air suspension "pop" sagging rear (searched)
Gents,
I was hoping someone may have experienced a similar issue with their E70 but, I searched and was unable to find a similar failure. I'm currently overseas and trying to troubleshoot this problem remotely, order parts and have my buddy repair early next week. Roughly 15k miles ago we had the passenger-side air shock go out. Sagging in the AM. My buddy swapped it immediately and so far everything been fine until a few days ago. My wife was returning from errands and she said she heard an audible "pop" then vehicle started to ride rough. I figured it was one of the air shocks, but when she showed me the X5 via facetime both sides were sagging. Both sides are completely flat and when the compressor kicks on, neither raise. I assume that with both sides being flat, the problem is not with either of the air shocks. The compressor is working as it kicks on when she opens the door. She can also hear the "air leak" but cannot locate it. Could a popped drivers side airbag lead to both sides going flat of are they independent systems? If the compressors working, could it be the vacuum block on the compressor? Yesterday, I ordered a new drivers side line, vacuum block and air shock. Am I missing anything? Thanks! |

My buddy checked it out this AM. Said the drivers airbag had popped. I thought each side was independent though. Maybe a completely failed bag will lose air on both sides?
The new bag will be there today, hopefully he can install today or tomorrow. I'll update once fixed. |

Could be a main feed line somewhere who knows. I guess if the driver side replacement doesn't work then I'd chase the line. Probably would help if he was under it when the pump is running. As I think both lines run along the driver side of the truck. |

He did get under it and traced both lines from the bags to the vacuum manifold on the pump while the compressor was running and the only place it was leaking was from the blown driver's side air bag. It was blown as in it audibly popped, not the traditional slow leak.
I'll update tomorrow when the new bag is in. Quote:

9 days later... the X5 did the same thing. No pop this time but, both sides are flat. Everything was fine, wife was driving home from errands again and the suspension warning popped on the screen and the rear was flat.
I'm hoping the airbag I purchased was faulty. Not sure what else it could be considering it's exhibiting the same symptoms as before. I won't be home for another week so, it'll be a bit before I can trouble shoot and repair. The air compressor is still working as well. Again, hopefully it's just a failed airbag. |

I would check the level sensors in the rear. Especially the linkage that connects to the control arm. I've heard of them poping off before. That would
Cause the system to over pressure the bags because it thinks the suspension is sagging. That could cause a bag to pop or a line to fail. |

The level sensors are in place and look fine via facetime. ha
The compressor pump turns on same as before and she can hear the air leak in the vicinity of the driver-side airbag, which is similar as before. Maybe I just purchased a defective unit. I ordered the vacuum block and replacement line two weeks ago so, they're both at the house. I just ordered a new air bag. Hopefully it's one of those 3 things. ha Quote:

I'm not sure if the bag has failed yet. The passenger-side OEM failed at 173k and was replaced with a DEDC off Amazon and has been fine for 18k miles. The Driver-side OEM failed at 189k and was replaced with a DOCAS of Amazon. I've been overseas for 9 months and my buddy installed both. I only did one at a time as I didn't want to ask more of him.
I accidentally purchased the DOCAS bag. I looked quick and purchased as I thought it was the same DEDC bag I use for the passenger-side. It was not. Again, not certain what has failed. |

Update: The hose popped out of the fitting.
Now I need to order a new fitting to ensure the in is secure. At least I have a spare bag now! Last edited by 335dsleeper; 07-03-2017 at 09:55 AM.. |

335dsleeper -
Do you still have that 'vacuum block'? I assume its the same thing others call a 'valve block'? I may need that part. I don't see a lot of info on how to replace that on the pump unit. I have a 2012 X5 50i. I have slow leak somewhere that results in both sides sagging overnight, same as your original issue here. I don't know how your one bag replacement fixed that issue. Thanks sir.

Recently after seeing my Airbags deflated and the garage recording no alarms on ECU it happened again a few days later only on one side.
Ordered 2 new Airbags and replaced same however still sagging. Pulled out the compressor and found the Solenoid Valve block only pumping air out of one port therefore looks like we found the issue. The problem im facing now is to the exact part to replace the defective solenoid block. I've source one but after checking against VIN: No. it comes up incorrect part. #4722555610 ffs is there anywhere or anyone that knows the correct part to order ive been at this 6 hrs now |

Good question to determine oem number, but I believe Arnott has a direct replacement part number VB-2898, fwiw. I know someone who used it as a replacement…
Btw, nice job troubleshooting
