As a side note...can someone knowledgeable explain how a software tune made my exhaust sound much deeper in M mode? (it sounds deeper without M mode as well, but the difference in sound is barely noticeable).

Throw some downpipes's on and your stock exhaust will sound like its on steroids during FULL boost. (with stock mufflers)
OR Install Meisterchaft catback exhaust....loudest and deepest sounding ive heard so far for x5/x6m's, (This is what im getting next)

I agree the stock exhaust does not sound good. Even aftermarket has left me a bit disappointed.
Also, it isn't the turbos that give the X5M its 'unique' sound, it is the exhaust manifold. While I didn't have the chance to put aftermarket exhaust on my X5M, I hope it will help with the sound of my M5 when it arrives in August. I came pretty damn close to getting a CLS63, the sound they make is mean. |

I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering if anyone's figured out the trick to getting that deep rumble out of the X5M?
I'm not crazy about that Akrapovic exhaust, still lacks that muscle car style rumble. Found a clip that has the exact sound I'm looking for. If anyone has suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. In the clip comments the guy says he had the entire exhaust replaced by Eisenmann. I'm wondering what it is about their system that can get that sound out of the X5M. |

You'll never get too deep of a tone on the car.
I'm running catless DPs and fabspeed exhaust and there's more of an angry rasp than grumble at WOT. I've heard some clips that reduce the rasp with an x-pipe put in place. I was looking to do this on my setup. |

I'm going to post up a video within a week of my setup, sounds mean with downpipes, x-pipe, and cheap Megan mufflers. Cold start pisses off my neighbors so I have to be strategic when I first start it. I only drive it once a week, sometimes twice.

Just passing through. Dont have a x5m, or rather a M car in particular.
I have a 2011 550i with the n63, catless and deleted mufflers. Sounds really good, got the V8 rumble. I see the reason of the M distinctive exhaust sound, not necessarily the v8 rumbleness that the other v8 should have. It is your exhaust manifolds. Note that all s63 and tus have the cross flow exhaust manifold to improve exhaust pulses from each bank to the twin scroll turbos. This cross flow technology is awesome on power gains, but it does kill that sound since the pulses goes in different ways vs a traditional manifold on my n63. My n63 has the regular manifolds( separate, each bank independent with their independent turbo). Similar to the subarus with equal length headers vs their unequal headers giving that "misfire" style exhaust that most subies carries. Since s63 and n63 are both v8tt when you get to the roots of them.....you'd think they should sound the same. Same firing order and such. But....that major difference in their exhaust manifold will expail your sound difference. Look up n63 550i exhaust clips, if that's the sound you are looking for.....well you'll need to replace your manifolds. If that's the case, sell the M and get the 50i which would be insulting.....lol. |

Thank you so much for clearing that up. I was actually going to post that as a question cause I noticed all the 50i engines sound amazzzzing when you delete the muffler or get louder mufflers. Didn't understand how the 50s could get such nice sounding exhaust notes but not the Ms. Thanks for clearing that up. At least now I can rest easy knowing that it's not really anything to do with the mufflers or DPs, etc. but the actual exhaust manifold. Much appreciated. |
