Recalls on x5 5.0 (N63 engine)
Greetings. Just at the dealer, Nalley in Atlanta. Sa told me there are two recalls on my car having to do with broken timing chain. Bmw is holding off though because the reprogram is not working so the other option is to remove engine from the car and replace the chain. She said she has s vehicle that has been in for two months with the issue.
Nothing related to injectors though. Happy new year. Check out the Porsche macan. If you can handle the smaller size, it's a winner!

I mean, could you post the recall number, please? That way we can look it up.
Never mind ... Thanks TinyRK! This sounds like trouble ... keeping an eye on it.

So glad I did some google searching today. I've had my 2011 X5 5.0 in for this issue last winter and they replaced the battery. Vehicle came out of warranty on 11/29/14. Right before then we get the increased battery discharge message". Now out of warranty I was looking into extended maintenance/warranty. Before I sign-off I will be dropping off the vehicle for this recall. Will provide updates as they become available.

I spoke to my SA this afternoon about this recall. She was aware of it but didn't have very much information. She plugged in the last 7 of my VIN and confirmed my vehicle was flagged in BMW's system as part of the recall, which she said gives me the green light to schedule an appt. to have it looked it. She said to request a service loaner vehicle for 2 days to allow a full inspection (and yes longer if everything on the list needed to be done).
I'm gonna wait a little while and see how this plays out. I'd rather have my X5 go in after the techs have seen/fixed a few of these. |

I'm wondering about the loaner car of "equal or higher class". It was never really an issue when I'd take my 335 in because a 328 is comparable enough. However BMW Seattle doesn't even have any X5s in their loaner fleet and the X3 and X1 they've given me for the recent visits are not even close to comparable. If I'm going to bring my car in for potentially a month long service I don't want to be stuck in an X1 again, hopefully they bring in some X5s as part of this massive recall.

Among other things, I was getting the battery discharge message also. I put in a new battery approx. two months ago, started getting the message again. When they replaced my seals last month, SA said I would have to pay $450.00 for a discharge test. Glad I did not do it. Going in on Tuesday.

Plus one about the S63 as well, seems like these issues aren't just being experienced by N63 owners. While I don't recall specifically, but I think i have heard of timing chain for the S63 as well, not sure if they are just extraneous cases or not.

Does anyone know what the incentive value of the N63 Customer Loyalty Offer is?

Taking mine in today, and I will be sure to mention this to them when dropping off.
I'll report back details once they have a chance to look at it.

My X5 just had the battery issue taken care of today. It is now booked for 1/26 to go under the knife and check on all of the other major issues. My SA said that they have known about this and was expecting it to come any day as the engine is just eating oil. They will replace my injectors, some lines, and check on everything listed in the bulletin. BMW as approved them to also fix ANYTHING they see if necessary once they get in there. I joked and said to throw in new turbo's while they are in there. He said that what they are fixing is the only known issues to this engine so it should be good to go for long haul. Only time will tell. I would make your appointment now as this will back them up for awhile.
As far as the "incentive" goes it is based on what vehicle you purchase. 1,000 off for a 1 or 3 series, 1500 off for a 5 or x5, or 2,000 off for 7 series. |

That's the million dollar question: will this recall significantly improve the 50i reliability? I've had mine for 4 months and it's been in 3 times already. I love the car, but I don't want to be a slave to repairs. Really hoping this makes a difference.

No.
Based on BMW's history since about the mid 90's, reliability is a hit-or-miss ... It also depends on what your definition of "reliability" is .... is. And what you're willing and able to tolerate in return for driving the Ultimate Driving machine. IMO, compared to other brands, they're going downhill. But the driving experience is unique ... and at the same time, my personal tolerance level is inversely proportional to sub par quality.
