Wheel sizes

Hi. My first post :-)
I have just taken delivery of an X6 40d in Alpine White
I was looking at option for winter wheels/tyres for UK but would not wish to stretch to 2100 GBP a set when there are so many part used wheels on ebay and good tyres all round will only cost me 800 GBP.
Question is, my car comes with the Y spoke 20 inch wheels, and self levelling. Can I fit 245/50/17s off a used X6 without problems?
Thanks

I believe the smallest wheel you can fit is 18 inch unless the X6 in Uk has smaller brake. I have 255/55/18 on my X6 and it barely clear the brake.

Hi I looked at getting used wheels and tyres but it was awfully messy. I needed run flats and also tyre pressure monitoring transducers. I think the smallest you can fit are 18 inch (certainly on the front). After much deliberation I ended up getting the BMW winter package. It's not a bad deal considering that tyres are £350 each and tyre pressure sensors are £70 each plus you also get new wheels. It was the trouble free solution for me. The ride is great with this package. If you get a good 2nd hand deal then I would say go for it but you may get mixed results and could compromise comfort and road noise if try to make with a self made package. My car was 60k plus so I did not think that 2k was too excessive since I plan to keep the car for a good few years. Hope this helps

Dunzzy has a point, what's extra $2k for the winters wheels/tires when you already spent $60K + for the vehicle.

I agree that 2k up against the 60k paid is on paper a fair investment. However, for us in UK the winter tyre concept is still quite new and funky, so it's a psychological thing I think!
Always feels painful doling it out ;-)
That said there's a good BMW supplier on BMWLand who usually discounts for forum members there - just bought some 50i exhaust tips for 20% less than my supplying BMW dealer wanted which is nice.
Cheers

I think 19's are the smallest size that will fit, the brakes are quite big on the diesels. I think someone on the forum had issues getting the 50i exhaust tips fitted to the 40d, as they are made for the 35d and 35i.

The part is listed for the 40d now as well:

2 separate dealers have confirmed and quoted 1 hour's labour.

I don't know if the diesels has bigger brake or not. But I do have after market 18" winter wheels on my 35i. They look kinda of small compare to my summer sets.

snipez999 I am sure your dealer can make the 50i tips fit your 40D. They do look better than the round tips.

That's cool, they look so much better. Did they order the bumper trim pieces too? you will have to get those painted.

joech, I will have a very similar-looking car to yours by the end of next week! Performance spoiler and side slats plus kidney grille are all with my bodyshop guy for fettling.
