Chrome tip pitting/chips - suggestions?

I have a 2012 M-Sport. This past weekend the weather was nice so I thought I'd tackle the tips. After giving them a thorough cleaning I discovered that the rounded edges at the ends were significantly pitted and the chrome had essentially chipped off.

Finding the replacement part number has been difficult - I finally had success on the BMW ETK (18 30 2 167 743). However, the part is $359(!) from Tischer and I need two.

Has anyone else seen this problem? I'm definitely going to contact my friendly dealer to try and get some relief but my regular SA is doubting they'll do anything. Contacting BMW NA is another option as well. Getting them re-chromed somewhere locally is an option....but I'm kind of pissed and not in a hurry to spend any real money on this.

I had same issue. I told the dealer it was a failure of the finish... no different from rust forming on tailgate.

Dealer disagreed, I escalated to BMW NA.

2 days later they replaces both exhaust pipes free of charge.

They replaced mine under warranty, but it's starting all over again. I'm out of warranty now.

goodmaj, assuming your still under warranty, print this thread and take to your SA.

If you want I can get a printout of my service record. Dont let them turn you down on this.

Not yet. I was going to make it a dual trip to the dealer as I need some curb rash taken care of, I just haven't had the time lately. This is most definitely still on my list.

Curb rash won't be covered by standard warranty.

Yes, I know that. They have a wheel guy who'll do it for me on the side for cash and for cheap. Just need to coordinate.

Salt, soot, and other environmental factors will all win, if you're not doing preventative maintenance on chrome.

Keeping things clean, and applying a metal polish often can make a big difference. If you're doing an occasional wash and simply wiping the soot off, you're doing nothing to prevent this.

It'd probably be a good mod to switch them over to polished stainless, I'm sure there's one out there.

Pablo, I went in today and saw the service manager. He pretty much told me no but took some pictures and offered to contact BMW NA. He kept repeating the "normal wear" mantra. I asked if it would help for me to contact BMW NA as well, he said no.

I would love to see a copy of that service record. PM sent.

Also, my wheel guy was set to fix my curb rash for $50/wheel but he informed me that since the wheels are machined he couldn't match the finish. They'd certainly look better (they're not that bad to begin with) but not 100% perfect. He suggested getting them completely redone instead. I might do that next fall when the winter wheels go on.

I'm on it... emailed SA for records.

Chicago finally decided to have reasonable weather today, so I got to work on my exhaust tips using bug-tar remover. Recall, these were replaced under warranty back in November. I've stayed on top of cleaning them much more than average. Anyway, after going at it with paper towels, backed with scrubbing effects of my nails, I was able to reduce the soot on the left (primary) side by @ 40%. It's pretty ridiculous that it's caked on there like that.

Update: Took the car in to get the rear blower replaced. While I was there, I asked them to look at an exhaust rattle at idle, I figured one of the mounts was probably loose. I also mentioned the corrosion. They ended up replacing the entire exhaust.....which happens to include the tips!

They also fixed everything else on my list. I suspect they were being a bit liberal in an attempt to win back my business, this was at a different local dealer that I used to use for everything, when I got the M5 I switched to another local dealer.

I've been a big fan of Eagle One Never Dull wadding polish for awhile and I'm going to be keeping a sharp eye on the tips from now on.

For the insides, I pretty much just use '0' steel wool with some sort of cleaner. It was amazing how clean the insides of new tips are.

Well, I made the mistake of letting mine go other than a cursory soap and water cleaning when washing the car, and after 4 1/2 years the chrome on mine is so pitted they don't seem to be able to be cleaned no matter what I use. My X5 is now out of warranty, and replacements appear to be readily available for $140 each.
