Clunky transmission
Just clipped 60k miles in wifey's E70 and transmission now clunks in 2nd and 3rd gears during low speed conditions. Also seems like the shift from Park to Drive has a lag to it before drive is engaged. This sound like fluid or something more dire?

Interesting you bring this up. Mine is about to hit 50K (2011, 8AT) and I am experiencing jerky 1st and 2nd gears. Odd thing is that is only happens when it's in D. The second I shift gears using automanual, the issue is no longer present.

I have a good friend who is a SA at my dealer and I have spoken at great lengths which him and a few techs about lifetime fills on trans and diffs. They all say that 50-60k is the most the recommend going without a flush and fill. May not be cheap but much cheaper than replacement. I changed the trans fluid on my 540 MSport at 50k and it made the trans much much smoother. The indy shop who swapped it for me said the original fluid was in need of a change

Could be something else I suppose.
My clunking was only present when slowing down, and the transmission was downshifting at low speeds.

On my 540 Msport manual I used redline. For my Automatics, I used OEM fluid. I just asked for a transmission service which included new transmission pan and filter (all one piece and made of plastic) and fluid. Not sure if it was completely flushed clean and only new fluid was left. Anyway you cut it, 90% new fluid is better than 100% old

Had the same problem on my 2011 X5 with 59K... Got the transfer fluid flushed and reset adaptive drive. Problem Solved!
Always better to flush the transfer fluid first then flushing the transmission fluid. |

Original BMW transfer fluid.. bought it from the dealership and only took 15 mins to flush and fill.
Ill see if I can find the receipt, cost around $55 for fluid it self. Update: Found the part# 83220397244 Last edited by moeenulhaq; 10-15-2014 at 02:32 PM.. |

I bought the fluid from dealership parts desk for I think around $50ish and flushed it my self, just open the transfer case bolt, fluid will start coming out it self or use a siphon to force flush it and once all out just fill it with new fluid till it starts over flowing. Very easy . will only take you around 15 mins.
