Head-Up Display on X6

I am struggling with options and packages with the X6. I like the Red, Dark Blue as well as the Space Grey... but matching that with the interior colors are a challenge... but I digress.

Does anyone have the Head-Up Display? Is it intrusive? Helpful? Let me know what you think. Also we are considering the Rear entertainment for future infants... not sure if it is worth it, but comments welcome.

Thanks for your help,
Dale

Not intrusive. I'd say boring. Pretty much all it shows is the speed unless you have a route set or if you get it coded to have the M-HUD to show the tach.

I wish they used the newer HUD...

I used to think my life before I got my x6 with HUD was worth living. I now know if wasn't.

Almost everyone with HUD loves it. Those without HUD however might argue to skip it. But it is one of those options that once you have it, it is hard to go back to a vehicle without it. The Navigation integration is really nice as well.

re: Color - There are so many great color combos. One thing to keep in mind is that when you go with one of the Sport Package options, you get the anthracite headliner. This makes the interior of the X6 very dark, especially when you have the black seats. Now some like this, I personally hate it and it almost made me skip the X6 (which because of the hatch, is darker inside than the X5). So I went with the Sand Beige (even though I have kids) and have been very happy (the carpet mats are also beige lightening up the interior more).

Last but not least, to me, I'm tired of all the black and gray BMWs out there - get some color on the vehicle - especially if you are ordering it.

Was considering this for long trips with future kids, and current nieces and nephews. Can you tell my why this sucks? I was high on it initially but cooled, now my wife is very interested.

I am going to get the heads up display. It looked fresh, and you guys have confirmed. I have a Platinum 328 Convertible, and liked it because I didn't see many. If I could do it again, I would have gotten the Saddle Brown interior.

The color that stands out to me is red, but the only interior colors that looks nice are light. We are concerned with kids and light colors. Our vert has light colors as well. White and Saddle seems nice to me, but I have seen a decent amount of White X6s in nYc. What is the color of your exterior?

Vermillion Red - Love the color combo. I'm at 8 months and 9K and the interior looks perfect. The new Midnight Blue looks pretty sweet too!

re: Rear entertainment - don't do it. For that cost you can buy a couple of iPads and make your kids happy with something modern. The rear entertainment screen has no where to go when down so it folds back onto the armrest - making that unusable. Skip this option.

I love my HUD. I just recently found out that it automatically dims from day to night.

Is it possible to turn the HUD off? Can you select whether it displays or not?
For those that leased 2013, was there a standard Residual Value & Money Factor for the 2013 models? I have seen the 2012 figures. I think I am going to make the purchase within the next two weeks.

Thanks!

20" rims in snow?

I was set for the M Package because I love the rims, then it hit me... I am getting this car because it is beautiful, AND I can fit a car seat in it... car seat + current 328 vert = discomfort.

I am going to be as practical as I can (x6 is not the practical option!), but can anyone comment on driving on 20's in snow conditions? Having an extra set of tires for winter seems like over kill for me, so right now, it looks like I am going to stay with the stock rims... unless...?

Thanks,
Dale

I would not recommend driving with the stock 20s in NY in the winter. This winter you would have been ok but you would have been stuck last winter. I was driving in NJ during the one day it snowed this year and on a real snow covered road it is not safe at all. I got some real nice winter tires and wheels for $2.7K form one of the places advertising on this site - very happy with the ride and the look.

But what about the All Weather 19" that come standard?
I moved back to New York last April and have driven my current car in SF for the majority of the time I have owed the car. I am from NY, and do know that it was 15 years since we had snow like we did in 2011.

Thanks for the help.

Snow and Ice

Dale I have looked at this issue a zillion times. I'm sure I've posted about it on this forum too. Talked to Tire Rack guys. Also I've addressed the tracking issue (rear tires wider track than front ones).

My conclusions:

1. I have 19" winter tires, all same size. They provide a bit more leeway in hard snow and ice ruts, where the sidewall will flex. The higher sidewall provides more give to avoid rim damage and also some more comfort (you get tossed around less).

2. If you have a lot of snow and ice conditions, the 19" tires make sense to me. Here in Alberta, we get some snow but really not much - our roads are bone dry most of the time. I'm not sure I'd do the 19" tires next time.

3. The tracking issue is, to my mind, not a big deal for most people. However, the wider a tire, the less performance on snow and probably ice (if you can get any performance on ice) - the weight of the car is distributed over a smaller surface area and therefore "bites" more. I think if you look at rally cars, they tend to have skinny tires on gravel, sand and snow courses.

4. If ice is a serious problem and it is legal where you live, there is no comparison to studded tires. Absolutely the best thing out there. Had some for 4 years (not on an X6) and it was like driving on rails in the winter.

5. All-season tires are a poor choice for winter. A compromise at best, a safety hazard at worst. Esp for the X6.

6. Run flat for me is important for the X6 for several reasons. Primarily, I like the slight additional stiffness - BMW engineered the vehicle with that kind of tire stiffness in mind. Also for safety - if I'm in the middle of nowhere and without a spare...

6. Ultimately, the most critical choice is the model of tire. There are not many choices for us. I hated the Pirelli Scorpions. The Bridgestone Blizzak WM-25s are OK. Some of the issue may just be that I was used to driving lighter vehicles - the X6 is a fat pig and you can't expect miracles out of the tires. My wife's 335i xdrive is awesome on her winter Michelins.

Okay, so it sounds like you are saying 19" vs 20" doesn't matter as much as the Winter vs All-Season tires? I will check this forum for your other posts on this topic.
Thanks,
Dale

I am skipping the rear entertainment.
I have read reviews that have mentioned that the driver hit it with his elbow both in the up and down positions. I saw it in a used 2011 X6 and did not like the location.

My 18 year old son will miss it, but I am not buying my car to entertain a kid old enough to drive his own. I had it in my Enclave. However, for any car, I would not recommend it for younger kids unless you do a lot of longer road trips. Nothing like having the kid delay your leaving the house, or argue with a sibling over a movie choice to watch on that 10 minute drive to the store.
