The negative is a small post sticking out on the same side, lower and closer to the front.

Before buying a new battery, it's good to know the factors leading to the battery discharging. Did the car sit in cold weather for a lengthy period of time? Despite the injustice, I've read that a battery maintainer should be used in these instances. I use a CTEK when I'm away for 5+ days. Is the battery more than 4-5 years old? Is the battery newer, get regular use, but still discharge? How many miles are on your car? If its a newer battery with a higher mileage car, it's possible the alternator isn't charging it and needs replacement. Your charging system can be checked by your mechanic. If the battery is simply older, then yes, replacement may be in order, and definitely before winter hits in earnest.

The car have about 62 000miles, it's the same OEM battery since 2007.

This morning the car didn't want to start, because of midle cold weather... about -18 celsius degrees (it's the first time today more cold than other days)

But my girlsfriend's car can start easy, and my sister's car too.

Of course they have brand new car (2012 and 2010).

It's safe to say you've been blessed/lucky it lasted as long as it did. Get a new battery without delay.

from reading is it true replacing the battery isn't such a smooth transition. Does something have to re-programmed by a tech for some readings?

Or we can replace and keep it moving ?

Good call, Bklynjoker (BTW, my sis lives in Carroll Gardens). Ideally, new batteries need to be "registered" to the vehicle. Here's some education/discussion on that: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=567915

Thank you !! I will get a new battery asap!

Heum question about that, do I need OEM battery? Or not necessary?

And do I need reprogramation? Somebody told me I don't need to have reprogramed the car...

True ou False?

You're welcome. Read through the link in post #11, which discusses, at length, registering your battery to your car, which pretty much can only be done by the stealership (a few exceptions apply). While you can get any battery that matches or exceeds the stock ratings, you should consider getting it registered to ensure proper operation/charging. However, the stealership may not be willing to register a battery if not theirs.

Thank you, Heum, do you know the battery spec I need to have?
Gel or Acid?
How many ampere should I need?

(I didn't check in my trunk yet)

You're welcome. I guess what it comes down to is this: Either 1. spend big money at the stealership and get it done as correctly as possible, or 2. save big money, buy one and install it yourself. If you don't have an independent mechanic capable of registering the battery to your car, there is a possibility the battery won't last as long if what some say is true about proper charging which comes with registering the battery. Fortunately for me, I got a brand new battery installed and registered by the dealership (not yet considered "stealership", since I was still under warranty) last month, just before my factory warranty expired. Since I plan to keep the car for no more than another 4-5 years, I don't expect to ever replace the battery. However, if I was in a similar situation to you, I would just handle it myself. If you have to spend $150 every 3-4 years or so for a new battery, it still beats $500+ at the stealership every 5-6 years. Besides, if you keep it on a battery maintainer for extended periods of extreme cold or non-use, it may last even longer...

My philosophy is, pay one time for 7 years of battery life and let someone else deal with R&R, instead of paying for an aftermarket part that may or may not last 4-5 years that you must install yourself.

My X5 just recently died on me too. I thought I needed a new battery. But after getting it tested and recharged. Found out that it was still good. My X5 had a hard time charging the battery due to corrosion on the battery. Also the removal and install of the battery is not that hard.
