2011 x5 USB says "not connected" issue

I just recently bought my x5 a few months ago and just today got a chance to tamper with the USB inside the arm rest. I have already used an AUX cord for my iPOD however i do not like the static frequency noise from it.

I used two different USB cords, one from the older generation iPOD and the newest cord from my iPhone 6. Both said "not connected"

I am wondering why…..? It will charge the device but that is it.

My friend suggested maybe there is a software update BMW needs to do?

Does anyone on here know the resolution to this problem.
