2010 E70 x5d misfire

Hey all,

After doing a lot of reading on here, I am seeing many variations of problems with the X5d. What I am not seeing is a description similar to mine to help me diagnose my problem.

The vehicle will start fine. On a random occurrence it will stutter/shudder. Just a minor misfire. It will become more frequent then I get the "engine malfunction" error message and it cuts power and starts chugging like it is running on 3 or 4 cylinders.

I took it in two weeks ago for this issue and the dealership replaced an injector (#4 I think) and the high pressure rail. I got the car back on May 29th and yesterday, June 6th, the same type of problem is occurring. They told me the first time the injector replacement is $1500 and the car just came off of warranty right after the last "repair."

Since the problem is not resolved, I am taking it back to see if they will cover this under warranty if it is the same problem that was not resolved at the last visit. BUT, I would still like to know what the hell is causing this random misfire and why. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Also note, if I cycle the engine off then on again, the error message disappears and it may or may not run fine again for another short drive. The misfire does not seem consistent.

Rough idle sounds like carbon buildup. Do some searching on the diesel sub-forum. Ignorant dealers change injectors when cleaning of the heads and intake is whats needed. CBU is quite common on the 335d's
