Hello everyone.

Today I looked at my maintenance screen and I saw front brakes are due with in the next 1000 miles.
Since my 2011 x5 is out of warranty / maintenance contract, I am looking for options if anyone knows in north NJ to do my brakes.
I am not looking to visit stealership so recommendations including price range for the work would be welcomed.

Front brakes are easy, it's the rear that's a little job with the Electronic Brake motor that needs to be de compressed by using a Tq screw driver. There's a YouTube on this electronic rear system DIY. Good luck

Pads are about $85US and sensor another $15US. You'll need to reset the alert in Idrive after changing sensor. There's a youtube video for this also.

Thanks to everyone for your quick response. I am trying to avoid DIY if possible. Does anyone know any reputable places in NJ area ?

Honestly is cash is tight then any mechanic can do this job or big chain gas station garages. But if money isn't tight I suggest just letting Park Ave BMW do it. Talk to ERIC CUELLO s/a he's the best & keeps its 100% real. Pad job should cost around 200. Don't quote me tho

Buying the replacement parts off amazon is the ticket. Super affordable for quality parts like centric, akebono, etc. You can get the rotors, sensors, and pads, all shipped quick. It's really a super simple job in 9/10 cases. Other than the stupid hex bolt holding the rotor can require some extra attention with an impact gun or special tool from ECS Tuning (what i have)

You're really looking at under two hours to DIY this. Which is cheaper than the hundreds of dollars the labor rate would be for this.

Wow great few hundred is not an Issue. I heard a quote for 1200 from someone. I figured if it takes me 4 hours to do it, maybe better to just have someone do the job. Greatly appreciate the recommendation will give him a call

Just got a quote from park Ave

Not sure but it seems pricey and I am looking at Amazon now

Front Brakes, pads, sensors, labor = $531
If rotors are needed they are $211 a piece.

This seems to be a bit high for a break job.

The sensor wire I bought from amazon, $26. Centric ceramic pads, $20, rotors $42/each. (All for the fronts) Don't recall what the rear parts costs, but it was just slightly more for the rotors IIRC.

All centric branded. I verified part numbers from centricparts.com and bought from amazon. Centric is a HUGE manufacturer of brakes, and owns PowerSlot as well as StopTech.

I was quoted $950 CAD for brake pads/ rotors and sensors and labor. Still too much.

Also note you may not even need brakes yet as sometimes the calculator on your screen is over board in its calculations.


I've had to have my counter reset twice before I needed pads and rotors. Lots of highway driving.

Just get the thickness checked and see if you are in need of them before taking the advice of your onboard computer.
