So I got my strut in the mail yesterday but I don't get my X5 until tomorrow, and there's only 48 hours to call them and get a return authorized if there's a problem with the parts. My question: is the strut permanently extended, or should it move freely like every other strut I've seen? This one seems to be fixed in the extended state and until my X5 shows up I can't test it to understand how it is supposed to work. Can someone who's already installed it let me know if mine is functioning as intended?

It makes it so that it's easier to open the hatch and holds it open.

I thought the same. But like the poster above says, it is perfectly normal and how mind was when I received mine two weeks ago. Installed quickly and easily.
