I feel your pain. I lost $11k I put on a down payment after owning my 11 50i in July 2015 then trading in for the f30 335i N55 in November 2015.
Three months of ownership and I couldn't deal with all of the N63 issues and recalls.

I really liked the look and the feel of the v8 but not worth it on my opinion.

I was considering a used 2013 5 Series w/the same N63 engine. When that engine started it sound horrible. Dealer said it was b/c the car was cold and had been sitting for a week, OK. The dealer and I reviewed the service history which stated the car had already been through the BMW Customer Care Program and said he was not familiar w/it and would get back to me after the weekend. BS.

I read up on it and it took me no time at all to realize that I would never buy any car w/that engine. Still don't understand how the S63 didn't have similar problems as it's the same base engine.

Sounds like you really got a lemon and then BMW on top of it blows off a very loyal customer. I'm a first time BMW owner with a 2012 X6M. No major issues in two years of ownership and 55k miles. I don't know where else i'd look. It really depends on what your mission needs and wants are. Just like getting an airplane (I do the same thing you do), everything is a compromise.

Wow.. I'm sure you saved yourself so much further hassle down range though... this motor is a liability for anyone that owns it

Hasn't been for me - powerful, reliable, no issues. But I also won't be owning it anywhere near the mileage you had on yours.

DO you guys know anything about the 2011 X-5 35D ? any info in regards to the white smoke that literally pours from my exhaust pipes is welcome.

White smoke from the exhaust is usually the signs of a blown a head gasket. Was the car overheated? Hopefully no head damage if so.

Is there white or blue residue on the bottom of the oil cap?

Is your oil the color of coffee with milk?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are looking at a head gasket issue most likely and a trip to the nearest BMW currency shredder is in your near future...

Not always true. Valve guide seals leaking down will cause the same symptoms. My 12 is getting them replaced now due ti burning 3qts every 600 miles. It leaked so much oil it fouled all 4 of my O2 sensors.

Well, it seems as if your vehicle has only been out of warranty 1-2 years with typical mileage. So that $35,000 would have to be in 2 years, not six, I'd think.

I noticed the 5.0 E70's were cheaper than I expected when shopping for CPO. That led me to decide to go 35i.

Everyone knows if the 4.4L of X5M has the same issue as the 4.4L of the 5.0i ?

Generaly, the 3.5i has less issue than the 5.0i, but I did not hear anything on the X5M engine..

I have both engines, both have been flawless so far except for occasionally adding an additional quart of oil to my 50i which is known for its oil consumption...not every 50i has problems fwiw

A blown head gasket is usually accompanied with white smoke and the smell of antifreeze thats mixing inside of your oil, an easy way to tell if its a blown HG is open the radiator cap and look for bubbles...if you see bubbles slap a FS sign on it!

Ha ha, all about the mileage buddy. Just wait...100% of the TTV8's have issues. 100% are ticking time bombs and BMW is well aware

Had valve seals done and new turbo. Less than 40k miles.

With Warranty = nuisance
Without warrant = insane

Still smile when I open it up, so worth it for now.

V6 did nothing for me.

Agreed. Most frequently failing items are either covered through BMW warranty extension or through the N63 CCP or just good willed. I had valve seals done at 49k miles, outside factory warranty - BMW good willed the repair. Overall im happy with the ownership.

I've had my 50i for over 2 years now buddy, it currently has 75k miles and besides adding a quart of oil every so often, it runs perfect... thanks for your concern

Had similar experience with our 2013 50i. It went down hill after around 50k. It didn't get as bad as OPs case, but good thing we have extended warranty through Geico, or we would have dumped it a long time ago.

We really really love that platform and engine, so we are thinking of another new 50i, but a lease this time and trade it after 3 years when then next gen should be out and have the bugs figured out.

7 month update...
So in July, we ended up trading our X5 into our local dealer and we leased a 2016 X4M40i. The dealer gave us an excellent trade ($6k more than Porsche dealership offer) price on the X5 and a favorable price on the new car. That transaction helped heal our wounds considerably and we really like the M40i after 4 months of ownership
