Update from SA: up to $4K bill to BMW to date. Both outstanding recalls were performed also. As you all know, there is the VANOS issue (dealers just start receiving parts on Monday) which was performed, along with the driveshaft recall. The front driveshaft was replaced.

What was the driveshaft recall about? I don't remember this.

Me neither, but I did some research:

Recall Detail Ref No. 10000413

Manufacturer. BMW

Vehicle Class. Passenger Car

Model/Type. X series (E7x)

Subject. Replace the front drive shaft

Progress. Running

Affected Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

Description of Defect, how it came to light, and possible consequences if ignored.

A worn universal joint may lead to undesirable vibrations and to an increased noise level in the vehicle interior. In individual cases, the universal joint on the front drive shaft may break. The drive torque for the front axle can then no longer be transmitted.

Remedial Action. Replace the front drive shaft.

All E70 & E71 built between April & November 2010 are affected by this.

Thanks! Also, you mentioned a 50K service. However, due to the condition-based service (CBS), I don't think there is one. I know plugs are replaced at 60K or every 4th oil change, but that's about it. Did your SA say anything about CBS?

The only items that popped up on the CBS were the oil change and the brake fluid change...

OK. I'm in the exact same boat as you (11/5 is my expiry), so I, too, and making as extensive a list as possible. As far as covered repairs, I feel it often depends on the SA you get. I was not impressed with the last one I got, who was more like a robot, and didn't seem interested in "going to bat" for me. Are they all under similar marching orders, or do some actually take interest in going above and beyond for customers?

The SAs at my dealership have been excellent to date. The gentleman I'm working with now is actually a new SA (to me) as the previous SA was recently promoted. I'm quite impressed so far, and he's knowledgeable as he was a tech previously. That being said, I do believe their "marching orders" are all the same: nothing will be fixed proactively. I was explicitly told that even if they see an issue that is not crucial to the operation of your vehicle, it will not be fixed under warranty until YOU tell them about it. I can see the logic behind that, as otherwise, they'd be fixing cars all day long.

I do feel that the SAs at my dealership are going "above and beyond" as they take my concerns seriously, and I never receive any sort of pushback on my requests.

I also noticed a foul odor coming from my A/C vents when the vents are just blowing vs. the A/C being on, so (for a fee) they will clean and disinfect the entire A/C system.

Thanks. I never have any problem pointing out stuff to them; only their pushback. At any rate, I'll hit them up hard with my laundry list, including the $150 inspection, and hope for the best. I'm very happy for you that you're being treated so well!

Does your dealership have an opinion on what is causing this odor?

There is quite a bit written about this on other forums and it seems to me that this must have a common cause ...

Is yours a diesel? DEF has urea in it, and when spilled is pretty foul smelling.

The SA blames it on our Southern climate. Humidity will cause the bacteria to accumulate, creating the odors...

Update of the day: some bushings were bad, also getting fixed. Should be ready on Monday. He stopped telling me what the bill to BMW will be at this point.

I live in Seattle…not a southern climate by any stretch, and not humid. I have the same foul odor coming from my vents from time to time, so I think his reasoning is off base

Mine is not from time to time... it's constant. I can describe it as almost a vinegar-like smell.

Alright gents, received the X5 back on Monday. Received a laundry list of things that were fixed, and was only charged the $150 diagnostics fee. I was expecting to be charged for the A/C cleaning, but turns out that everyone gets one FREE A/C cleaning during their factory warranty period and mine hadn't had that yet.

Total bill to BMW for all the work done was around $6,000. I calculated the cost of just the parts; close to $2,500. Ouch. Happy to have her back, but that 335i was a lot of fun to drive!
