I know there are videos on youtube. There is also a great looking impact screwdriver sold by a vendor on here for the purpose of rotors, among other things. It's not a specialty tool, just a nice to have.

As for parts. Centric makes excellent rotors of OE quality. If they make it, go for the Centric Premium units with painted hubs. Raybestos "Advanced Technology," has a similar rotor with painted hat.

As for pads and sensors, centric has those. you can also get parts from Hawk, and Stoptech. A standard ceramic pad is fine in 80%+ of cases. Towing? opt for a semi-metallic pad.

No special tools, just replace brake sensor if needed. One on the left front caliper and one on the right rear caliper. Just Remove anti rattle clips and remove the two black plug covers behind the caliper and insert the No 7 hex socket. If removing the rotors, you will have 2 bolts holding on the caliper bracket and then there is 1 hex screw holding on the rotor. Hopefully it not rusted on. You know the rest, Very easy.

This is the one special tool you'll need depending on the brakes. My 50i M Sport does not use a 7mm hex bolt, as most/all other BMWs seem to. It's 10mm, and that size is nearly impossible to find.

I have a thread on here about painting my calipers which I did this Spring, I go into more details there.

Otherwise, yup, super easy.

I'm digging out this thread since I have to do a brake job on my X5d soon. (4k miles left on BC and BMW quoted me a replacement when I had the DEF refilled)

The dust with the OEM pads is IMO ridiculous.

Any recommendations on low dust brake pads?

Has anyone experience with the low dust pads?

HarborFreight. Not impossible, and very inexpensive for a set of metric sized socket hex bits. That's where I got mine for my Aprilia bike and a few other aftermarket suspension items related to my Subaru

I have an 08, 3.0si. I have replaced both front and back. I used Brembo rotors and Akebono pads. NO dust what so ever. The only thing with Akebono is that the pads NEED to be burnished to the new rotors and they pads will take about 1000 miles before you really get the 100% power of braking back. Once you get past the 1000 mile mark, they feel like OEM brakes in my opinion.

You should get a brake vac and change out the brake fluid while you are in there. You will need a Mitivac or some other similar type of tool you can hook up to an air compressor. There are plenty of DIY videos on how to do this. I use Amsoil DOT 4 brake fluid.

Cost is probably :

$40.00 brake fluid

Mitivac - $130.00

Akebono Pads Front & Back - $130.00

Brembo Rotors Front & Back - $275.00

New retaining clips - $30 to 40.00

New Sensors front and back $40 to 50.00

Thank you! That is the info I was looking for..

The front brakes were recently done with warranty!
I'll go the same route for my rears.

Did you reset your service indicator in the iDrive? If not you can do that your self. Also did you replace the brake wear sensor? If not you will need to because they are a measured sensor and will only last a certain period of time.
