2011 X5 - almost out of factory warranty

My CPO 35i is almost out of warranty. I have a month and ~300 miles left before I got from factory warranty to CPO. It's going in tomorrow, but wanted to see if there's anything I should bring up or mention that could possible cause headaches in the future when no longer covered by CPO.

How many miles do you currently have on your vehicle?

schedule a 50K service, ASAP, and tell them about the mileage and CPO.

a good dealer will honor if you are a couple hundred over.

It's going in tomorrow, and so far it looks like they're saying only an oil change is in order. They were strict on the fact it should go in with less than 50K on the ticker, so I made sure it will.

Do you know what is covered under a 50K service?

I don't know but my 11 was inspected and had full front brake parts and service at 49.7K miles.

Maybe the owners manual has details.

Mine also got front/back brakes done (rotors and pads), brake fluid flushed and replaced Air & cabin filter along with an oil change together at 49.8k all under warranty and maintenance.

Good call, thanks. I had brake fluid flush, air/cabin filters and oil change on the list. Also, wipers are streaking so I'll add that to the list also.

OK, took her in today and got a new 335i as a loaner. NICE!

Turns out BMW does not do a pro-active walkthrough when a vehicle is close to end of warranty. It has to be proactively noted to the SA before it will be looked at, and covered under warranty. But what they do have is a service where you pay $150 and they inspect the entire vehicle. Based on that inspection, if anything is found, it's fixed for free under warranty. So you're essentially taking a bit of a gamble, but for $150, I thought it was worth it.

I'll keep everyone posted.

I thought so too. Even if they find one thing, that'll mean I'm at least breaking even!

I'm curious as to what exactly they inspect for $150 (at best that would be, may be one and a half hours?).

Do you have a written list of what they inspect? Visual only? Often times that is not enough to initiate a warranty claim ...

This is the information I have on the service:

No one knows your BMW as well as we do. Let our BMW trained technicians and state of the art diagnostic equipment care for your BMW. Think of it as a health check for your BMW. We will review the diagnostic results with you and provide estimates as needed to keep your BMW performing as it should.

$150 for X5 6 and 8 cylinder models

Work performed in this package:
• Vehicle Tests will be determined based on prevailing issue. Certain electrical issues will require tests with the BMW diagnostic tool.
• Includes 60 minutes of diagnosis.
• Diagnostic results will be reviewed and an estimate will be provided as needed.

My SA made it clear that any issues found based on this service would result in the repairs being covered under warranty.

OK, thanks for sharing. Presumably the diagnostic tests have been done and the results have been or will be shared with you? Can you share with us?

Naturally, I am now highly curious as to what exactly those "diagnostic tests" are ...

I assume a bit of both: they will call me/email me with the test results, and let me know what needs to be repaired under warranty. When I pick up the vehicle, I'll be shown the results.

Just got a call from the service advisor. My $150 is paying off. So far they found an oil leak, a transmission fluid leak, the spark plugs need replacing and the center cassette on the panoramic sunroof is faulty, which is a full-day job in itself. According to the SA, up to $3K in repairs covered under warranty at this point.

That's amazing. For that service, do they check underneath with the suspension, etc? I'd think a lot of potential repairs may be found there (bushings, tie rods, etc).

$150 well spent - glad you're getting this stuff fixed under warranty.

However, it's a little disconcerning so much stuff is leaking! And broken. I guess at 50K miles stuff starts to malfunction...

I agree with you mate. Honestly, I'd never spotted a single leak coming from that vehicle (and I park my X5 in the garage) so I'm slightly surprised. I suppose the leak was minor enough that it did not create puddles? Who knows... Let's see what else they find!

Yah, not surprising really. With all the covers on the undercarriage of these vehicles, leaks rarely hit the garage floor anymore.
